Well not strictly true, but Amazon UK has only one (over-priced) "collectible" copy available (£35 + p&p). The reason they do that with the last one , is so no one will buy it ! Then when they get more stock they will lower the price , then they don't have to pay to relist the item again .
That certainly isn't true.
The WRG model is to order another print run done once stocks run out (which may take a while depending on how busy the printer is). Most of the Amazon copies are bought direct from WRG but fulfilled by Amazon.
The overpriced "collectible" copy isn't sold by WRG. It is probably a certain particularly avaricious stockist who will always try and sell a copy he hasn't already sold on his own site at an inflated price he thinks someone will be desperate to buy.

...if you like the latest version 3, Sues publikation is not the best choice. There are just a few army lists... But possibly the better choice for a beginner, who can then get the full version with all the army lists later.

Even Sue's version of DBA 3.0 without the critical diagrams is a far better choice than DBA 2.2 - if you have any allusions to wishing to have a "simulation" of medieval warfare.
Staying in print is a huge problem (as well as expensive hardback). Its why I went with electronic publishing - cheaper for consumer and never out of print (also allows free updates/fixes).

Who prints the books? Well whoever it is, they never seem to print enough, and it always take a while to get a reprinting done. So, maybe it’s time to find a new printer?

DBA: DE BELLIS ANTIQUITATIS Version 3.0 Thanks

Matthew -- it is not the printer at fault, it is the publisher that is holding back, not wanting to invest in a large number of books at one time. It is WRG, Phil and Sue who do not authorize printing enough at one time. It is time to print on demand through War-game Vault or Lulu

Bob and I can attest that Lulu does a beautiful job with a soft bound book.
I will attest that Lulu does a great job with a hard bound book. (Don't know if Bob has any experience with a Lulu hard bound book...he might).
Yes, time for POD.

One issue with print-on-demand might be cost (?). I’ve only used lulu PoD a couple of times, and the books I obtained were considerably more expensive than print run copies might have been. eg the excellent Great Battles of History for DBA3 was around (IIRC) £35 softbound, whereas a similar sized copy of v3 hardbound is around £20 in the UK. Likewise the reissued Armies of Feudal Europe was around 150% of the cost via PoD than one might expect for another of the print-run copies of Armies and Enemies type books.
Having to PoD also takes away the ‘impulse buy’ sales opportunity at shows (eg) or from a gaming website.
Having both available would be ideal I guess.

Sue has just posted in the Yahoo group saying that once the remaining copies from the latest run have been sold, WRG will be switching to PoD via Lulu.

Great Battles is $38 from Lulu... and they often offer greater discounts. They also offer a reduced price for the owner to purchase in bulk for resale.
That being said... Martin... you are quite correct. Lulu is more expensive and the margins are much less (trust me!)
I think the perfect solution would have been for a large initial print run... and then going to LULU once that had sold out.
This allows the writers to make some money... and stock the stores... but then alleviates the print-run issue.
One could still provide copies to the resellers... but at very little margin.
But then, the risk, the trouble, and capital outlay is very low.

Absolutely, Joe. To me the greatest risk seems to be that unless it’s ‘out there’ on show, fewer gamers will go down the ‘buy blind’ route. That’s why I’m an advocate of hard copy.
