Mark, Greg and Peter
That is excellent news - I look forward to seeing your inner armies dancing around the table.
I think I am settled on Trapezuntine Byzantines, if there is an odd number of players you will see this army - rebased and built up to Purple Compliance hit the table with a vengeance.
I should also have finished the Feudal Spanish (c list), Low Countries (a list) and possibly Early Bedouin (a list) by then too. Only the Spaniards would be considered for a tournament army - but I was always fond of the Trapz
Cheers

Sunday was another good day for painting
2x3Ax for the Early Bedouin 2x4Bw for the Trapezuntine Byzantine 1xLCh for the Caledonians
And a major portion of the Picts are partway through basing (the Pumice phase) including a camp (Standing Stones from rocks picked up by the side of the road)

I had a good day at the table today - finishing off 1x3Cv for the Feudal Spanish 1xLH(Gen), 1xLH and 5xPs for the Numidians - in the case of the Ps it was just painting shields on converted figures 1x3Wb(Gen) for the Caledonians.
The Numidians are just shy of one LH and the Feudal Spanish are just one Kn from completion.

Greg,
Stephen Tibble makes the assertion at the very beginning that the Crusaders DID have a strategy, but often could not make it work due to tactical considerations (primarily lack of manpower).
I am about a hundred pages in and it is a good read, and makes sense. I have just finished the chapter on the coastal strategy - it was a sound argument. I am now reading about the hinterland strategy.
Cheers
Sounds like a an interesting read David. Would I be able to borrow it when I return Praetorian at Collision Course in May? Cheers, Of course Greg.
I will have it waiting for you in May.
Cheers

Save the Date DBA Players in Oz
Canberra Regional Wargames Group in association with Hall of Ancient Warriors, Mick's Metal Models, Essex Miniatures Australia, Olympian Games and Leadbear's Tufts present
Collision Course VI - DBA With A Twist
The now internationally renowned <Thanks Tony Aguilar> Modified Deployment DBA Tournament is back for 2021 in a new venue. Collision Course changes the deployment rules to simulate the accidental encounter between two armies marching.
Venue: Lanyon Vikings Club - Heidelberg St Conder, Australia Capital Territory
Date: Sunday May 23rd
Doors Open at 11:00AM - all entrants must have their temperature checked and use the CBR Check in App when they enter the venue.
This will be a 5 round Swiss Chess format draw with historical seeding used in Round 1 and in the case of equal scores.
The format is Open (one army against all comers), Fixed List (the same 12 elements used in each game), 15mm Scale, DBA3 rules
Dismounting rules are played as written - but elements that can dismount will attract a higher rating for the purposes of the Magister Militum (handicap) Prize.
Deployment is modified to simulate an accidental encounter between two marching forces.
The cost is $18 to enter with a range of discounts - most players will pay only $10
There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd with additional minor prizes for those finishing outside the top 3: * Executioner Award - most kills in a single battle * Magister Militum Prize - highest adjusted score
Last place will not go home empty handed either
This will be the second event in the Magister Militum per Capitoline Territorialis circuit for 2021/22 - to qualify for "The Grand Maurice" you need to compete in at least 3 of the DBA Events held in the Canberrra Region.
Looking forward to seeing you there
Cheers

After finishing 1066 The Year of the Conquest I moved on to 'The Crusader Strategy: Defending the Holy Land' by Stephen Tibble Cheers David, the title begs the question whether the Crusader states had a strategy for defending the Holy Land. I'd be interested in your thoughts on the book. Cheers, Greg,

We had our third session on Sunday with an excellent turnout - two new players joined in bringing us up to nine players.
Apulia invades Calabria. The battle of Scalea is an unscientific affair in the open as the two lines collide then break apart. The Calabrian forces rally after being hammered in the initial stages and eventually beat back the Apulians with both sides suffering significant losses.
At the end of 1051 the prestige table stands at Duchy of Calabria – 12.9 Emirate of Sicily – 11.9 March of Tuscany – 10.0 Empire of the Romans – 5.0 County of Apulia – 1.0 Caliphate of Egypt – 0.0 Patrimony of St Peter – 0.0
1052
The Holy Roman Emperor turned his attention to the South and massed his forces to intervene in Italy Holy Roman Empire – Austin Kenney – Black III/53 East Frankish
In Tunisia the Berber tribes coalesced into a coherent state prepared to show their strength Sultanate of Ifriqiya – Tony Cotton – Light Green – III/75 Islamic Berber
Spring
Spurred on by Apulian agitators, the Pope declared his oath of submission to Tuscany dissolved. The Roman mob rose up and cast out the Tuscan overseers.
Before the Tuscans could react to the Papal revolt they were confronted by an invasion by the Holy Roman Empire from the north. The battle of Pisa was a long drawn out affair as the two sides fought in the clear ground between a village and a forest. Eventually the Tuscans were victorious. The Sultan of Ifriqiya launched an attack on the Papal States. The Apulians rode to support the Pope. The battle of Ostia was a hard fight which flowed back and forth in the centre with the Berbers eventually winning. The Apulians arrived too late to effect the outcome.
The Margave of Tuscany responded to Muslims on his doorstep with an attack on Ostia. The Berbers fled before the Italians – retiring to Tunis and leaving their recent conquest to resist the invaders as best they could. The city refused to surrender and a siege ensued.

A good solid afternoon in front of the paints yesterday saw me finish 1x3Ax(Gen), 1x3Wb(Gen) and 1xPs for the Early Bedouin (a list) 2x4Cb for the Northern Sung 2x4PK (one being the dismounted Kn) for the Low Countries
I also completed the first phase of rebasing my Trapezuntine Byzantines - 11 elements soaked off the old cardboard bases, stuck onto Laminate/Magnet bases from Olympian Games and then given the initial crushed pumice earth. I have to paint 2x4Bw, 1xLH(Gen) and 3xLH as well as complete the basing and this army will join the Purple Compliant ranks.

Over lunch I finished '1066: The Year of the Conquest' - not a bad narrative, very sympathetic to Harold but in the end quite critical and suggesting that he was overwhelmed by the Papal injunction, making that the reason for each of the perceived tactical mistakes made by the Anglo Saxons. It was written in the 70s so might lack some of the more recent research.

Over the extra long weekend I powered through 'Age of Conquerors', 'Age of the Crusades' and 'Medieval Knights' which completes my recent Concord acquisitions.
I am now about halfway David Howarth's "1066: the Year of the Conquest" which is a narrative of the year 1066 - from multiple points of view but heavily leaning to Harold as the hero. A good read
