I think one has to accept a certain amount of abstraction if the whole thing is not to bog down or look overly strange. Our models and terrain pieces, and to a degree the rules themselves are representations of the eras we are portraying.

One of my Christmas presents was the DVD of Michael Wood's "In the Footsteps of Alexander". I haven't watched it yet, but it will be interesting to see how well it has aged since it first aired. (Watching one of Michael Wood's original "In search of..." programmes - possibly the one on Athelstan - after a gap of forty years was a bit of a shock.) I have the book which I found fascinating even though it is not my era of interest. Not sure about the film from what’s been said though.

You could always try a dice rolling app! I tried that 🙁 Found an app, downloaded it onto my iPad, first time I needed to roll for pips I shook the iPad violently, spat on it and hurled the iPad across the table. On it’s way it wiped out an element of longbows and pike, before impacting the wall and disassembling itself into it’s component parts. Bloody technology 🤯

GW actually got me back into wargaming using their fantasy rules and figures. they then bought out Warhammer English Civil War, my favorite period. Try as hard as I could not like the rules. Something was not right.
My other go to period is the War of the Roses, and that was when I discovered DBA. Not looked at GW since.

Fun Baldie, even if in age of telephone line for Russians and radios for Germans!! CarlL Mmm! I remember back in the 1990's when in the Police Service, here on Earth a man could talk to a man in space but, it was, apparent to your average Bobby that it was beyond the wit of man to be able to develop a communication device which enabled us to speak to a colleague a mile away. Conversations were usually along the lines of... "Lima10 do you receive?" Crackle fizz crackle " This is Lima FIZZ did FIZZ call CRACKLE over?" "If that's Lima 10, you sound like your heads in a bucket, suggest move position, over" "FIZZ Lima CRACKLE, is FIZZ that any CRACKLE over" "Not Really Lima 10 but keep a look out for a Red Ford Escort VRM S123ABC, Copy?" Lima 1 FIZZ, say again you CRACKLE broke up, Something about FIZZ Ford Escort, CRACKLE?" "Yes Lima 10 Ford Escort red S123ABC needs to be stopped, over" "Oh! It went Past about CRACKLE 1 min ago, over!" The cutting edge of crime fighting in the 1990's!

Has anyone tried the period specific War of the Roses rules “Test of Resolve”. I downloaded the PDF of the rules which are a bit pricy and bought the game cards required (a bit pricy also). I have played three battles now and I am very impressed. Play fast, loads of period flavour and being card driven great for solo play. Everything is resolved by rolling a D12 dice (which I also had to b get. works with all scales and is not dependant on basing or figure removal. I would be interested in the views of others.
