Ah, the trophies had a "pairs" theme. Sorry Martin, that completely passed me by, particularly with reference to Colin's trophy! Scott

Thank you to Martin and everyone who had my kids annoying them, I'm really sorry about that, especially Lindon who had the misfortune of Leo rolling his dice for him against Ruby! She is a demon for rolling well A great first matched pairs for me despite losing to two of my nemesis Terry and Richard with Richard seeming to scupper any chances at winning a tournament every game we play! (I think going into the final round I was ahead on points then had to decide between two armies that just confuse me!) I was shocked that everyone I played using my armies all chose Atillas Huns. Managed three wins from that though with my fourth coming using Phippsy's Libyans in I think the most hilarious game, let alone game of DBA I have ever played with psiloi and aux constantly trying flanking moves on each other and failing. You realise, of course, that makes you my favourite to win the Northern Cup in three weeks time P. A couple of us were saying as much only yesterday, Paul.

OOOH yes, Scott! The lady adorning my trophy is sporting a very nice pair of snakes, one in each hand. Google tells me she is an ancient Minoan snake goddess. I assume she is not 1600 years old and picked up by Martin scouring the island of Crete whilst waiting to fly his plane home, but rather a lucky charity shop find... even then?
As for The Northern Cup and being tipped for success – all I can say is; beware, I have the snake goddess with me now!

Colin, I think the snake goddess should be banned from the Northern Cup. It would be an unfair distraction. i could imagine the sight of that "nice pair of snakes" going round In my head and subconsciously affecting my dice throwing. I don't think the northern folk would be terribly chuffed with your liberal southern degenerate art forms, either.
Martin, I think the tournament goes from strength to strength. I think players are getting better at providing challenging matched pairs (although I suspect Oli's performance of three from three with his own armies might well be record). And what a prize table. Two new excellently painted armies, another full unpainted one, lots of terrain and a library of books. Worth emphasising that even with 24 players, everybody got a prize. I am sure that everyone who attends for the first time tries to make a slot in their calendar for it in subsequent years.
For the record, my pair were Classical Indian and Mountain Indian, with the Mountain Indians winning all three games. I lost with early Byzantines against Sassanids, although would still choose the Byzantines; Won with one of two identical successor armies, but was helped, in my opinion at least, by winning the aggression roll and being the attacker; and won with Crusaders against Turks, another choice I would make in the same way again.
Looking forward to next year's tournament already.
Scott

Huge thanks to Martin for masterminding another tremendous day of DBA games at Alton. Wonderful prizes but most important of all good to to see so many players supporting the event, many travelling some distance to be there.
Congratulations to Colin, Martin and Denis for their top three places. Denis using borrowed armies he had not seen before!
A highly competitive day where just a few points separated a number of players. But always played with good humour though much surprise expressed by some of the dice rolls.
Huge apologies to Oli for again spoiling his party, one day your day will come Oli!
My Russians v Lithuanians never turned out as expected. Russians proved largely unsuccessful the Lithuanians not even getting off their horses during any of the three games played. Not sure what all the fuss about dismounting is about, the real problem is stopping Pete Duckworth from using any army at all!
Used Saxons twice in the other games, they are lovely.
Looking forward to next year already.

DFDG: DAMN FINE DAY'S GAMING!
Huge thanks to Martin for organising and hosting one of the best events on the UK DBA calendar. And congratulations to Colin, Denis the Menace and Martin M.
I took II/68b Pictish and III/24a Middle Anglo-Saxons + III/19a Welsh ally (Cv + 2x3Wb replacing Ps + 2xGreat Fyrd/Select Fyrd). All opponents close the Muddled Saxons and I was outfoxed by Richard and Denis the Menace before Ruby's dice rolling helped me to outbattle Lindon!
Great to catch up with the DBA fraternity and to see the church hall at Alton packed for the day.
Wunderbar!

Great to catch up with the DBA fraternity and to see the church hall at Alton packed for the day. Wunderbar! Dunc DFDG indeed. Thoroughly enjoyable. Many thanks to Martin for running a slick event whilst competing ( very well) at the same time. Thank you from all for the bounteous prize table. Further thanks to all for coming along, Twenty-four, an excellent turn out. I took the Battle of Carchemish, 605 BC. Nebuchadnezzar's Neo-Babylonians versus Pharaoh Necho's Saitic Egyptians. Heavy Chariots and Bows versus Spears. The first two opponents chose Pharoah and history repeated itself as Nebuchadnezzar showed them what for; Martin chose the Babylonians by die roll and narrowly lost. Three from three for my pairing. In the meantime, Oli gave me a good thrashing in the opening game. I chose Attila and realised my mistake mid deployment, the two solid warband would be a liability and toothless! I still had plenty of chances when it came to it, but Oli's Ostrogothic Knights had the dice...6-2. I chose Denis Grey's beautiful Ancient Brits against EIR and went hard at it, but too many drawn combats left me at 2-1 up at 'time'. I chose Scott's Mountain Indians to tackle the Classicals and had better PIP luck, going on to crush his Bow with my Pikes. Planning next year already!

Ah, the trophies had a "pairs" theme. Sorry Martin, that completely passed me by, particularly with reference to Colin's trophy! Scott Yes, 3rd was a medieval knight and lady ‘pair’ trophy, 2nd a Greek Hoplite and psiloi running pair trophy for the runner up, and first trophy was a Minoan priestess with a magnificent pair of snakes........magnificent indeed. And no, Colin, I didn’t dig her out of the Cretan earth on a recent holiday (though we did see the ‘original’ in the Heraklion Museum). More info to follow when time allows....... Thanks for all the feedback and comments so far. It’s frantic-but-fun to run this event, and the spectacular level of support was both intimidating and ultimately rewarding.....👍👍👍 Martin

........I chose Denis Grey's beautiful Ancient Brits against EIR and went hard at it, but too many drawn combats left me at 2-1 up at 'time'. Thank you Martin. I confess that I found painting them rather a chore and needed the incentive of taking them to Alton in order to get them finished. Our game - which I think finished at 3-1 to you - was an object lesson for me in how they ought to be used and was the only game in which they inflicted any casualties, the other two games ending 3G-0 and 4-0 to the Romans.

Denis using borrowed armies he had not seen before! (I confess I did have a sneaky think about them in advance - Is that cheating?) Many thanks to Martin for organising a great event and for loaning myself and Jamie our troops. (He also passes on his thanks and ‘A very enjoyable experience’, which is effusive praise from that particular 11-year-old.) I ended up 2-1 with my opponents’ armies, and 2-1 with my own/Martin's. Apologies to those - you know who you are - who ended up victim of some outrageously lucky dice in those wins. It was also very nice indeed to leave the 2’ square battlefield not only with a fine trophy but also in possession of a genuine O’Shea. So many thanks to him too for his donation, now proudly on display at McManus Towers. Hope to see you all again a bit sooner than last time. DTM

Photo's are now in an album on Yahoo. I managed about a dozen, but then the site won't load any more into the album. Tried about 5-6 times, but no luck.
When my patience levels are higher I may try again, but yahoo groups has become something of a liability, rather than an asset....
Anyways...enjoy.
