I can't bloody stand them. Leo however... Loves every last thing about them, from the original 80's cartoon through to the really bad live action movies

I took a pair of armies that needed updating for V3 – III/73b Communal Italian and III/77 Papal Italian. This pushed me to rebase a number of elements and to make a command wagon, war wagon and Papal litter. Some years ago I built a BBDBA Communal army under 2.2 and so had plenty of spare figures, I only had to find a suitable pope.
The BBDBA army had 3 carroccios and I used one of these for the Cwg. Information on a suitable war wagon was hard to come by but thanks to The Society of Ancients and a gamer who posted photos of his on line I constructed a suitable model out of odds and ends. The Pope mobile was a pretty straight forward medieval style litter made with plasticard and strung between a forward and rear beast. The pope was a bare headed renaissance Arab gunner sitting on a barrel with his hands over his ears – no doubt shielding them from the blare of the nearby pair of trumpeting heralds. Sitting there amidst adoring sycophants, in his red slippers he looked the part!
Army lists:
III/73b 1xCWg (40x40), 2x3Kn, 4xSp, 2x8Cb, 2x7Hd, 1xWWg (40x80)
III/77 1xLit (40x80), 3x3Kn, 3xPs, 2xSp, 2x4Cb, 1x5Hd
Which army would you choose? The clock is ticking... you have at most 50 minutes game time including you making a decision, setting up and playing. You don’t really have time to check on command wagons, litters...
Covering more of the battlefield surface than just about any other pair of armies present and with a range of uncommon element I thought this would test my opponents’ knowledge of the rules. However,to save gaming time I did a lot of explaining to my opponents as to what some of these elements could and could not do. One thing I didn’t give away was that an 8Bw element could be made much stronger sitting next to a command wagon – 4 against foot and mounted (rear support and side support) – not that it ever came up in the games!
Both these armies proved difficult to win with particularly as three elements would not be allowed to enter into combat (front edge or corners), two of these being the powerful generals’ elements and they were usually in the front line. As usual in matched pairs most of my wins came from using my opponent’s armies. After suffering two draws with my own armies I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had nudged ahead at the end, so nobody gained more than 4 wins from 6 games – an indication of the challenges, I think. With 24 competitors, some players we had not seen for a while and several new faces, this was a very well attended event. For anyone new to the UK DBA tournament scene they would have seen us at our best in a supremely well organised event. Everyone received a prize and there were trophies (with a ‘pairs’ theme) for the top three. I like the charts that Martin sticks to the walls – telling you who is who, the playing order and results as they come in. As the day wore on there could be seen an increasing number of players crowding around the results sheet. The final tally shows how close the end result was and how many players were within reach of winning a trophy before the last game.
Thank you, Martin, for a great day and a great prize.
Colin

Third, First and Second podium places. More pics will follow on Yahoo later.....this forum is effectively full, photo-wise, so to get this one on I had to delete a previous post.
Colin, thanks for the report, and congrats on the win!
