Am I missing something in the rules?
If an army list choice has a "/" separator that I read this as being "either /or" but must be declared at the start of the game. So "3Ax/4Ax" means that that element as either 3Ax or 4Ax.
However, if there is more than one such unit i.e. 4 Warriors(3Ax/4Ax) do all the elements fielded have to be of the same type or can the selection be split? So in this example is the army limited to 4 x 3AX OR 3 x 3AX or could 2 x 4AX AND 2 x 3AX be fielded?
Thanks
Paddy

Thanks Paddy The diagonal line separating the two codes requires that all must be of one type; 4 x warriors (3Ax/4Ax). The word ‘or’ separating the two codes gives you the option to mix; 3 x archers (3Bw or Ps).
Some army lists may repeat similar options with other troop types thus giving you an opportunity to mix types.
II/11 Gallic Army 1 x General in chariot (LCh) or on horseback (Cv) or on foot (3/4Wb), 2 x chariots (LCh) or cavalry (Cv), 2 x cavalry (Cv) or warriors (3/4Wb), 6 x warriors (3/4Wb), 1 x skirmisher with bow, javelin or sling (Ps).
In this example, the Gallic player can field six 'solid' 4Wb and two 'fast' 3Wb or the opposite quantity; depending on playing style and terrain laid down.

Army first, ask terrain questions later.......at least round these parts. M otherwise the armies with multi multi choices would be so flexible as to be unbeatable in all terrains.

A quick note:Here, across the channel, we do not organise tournaments. So games are relaxed learning sessions using historically matched armies. The beer is cold and the wine is served at room temperature.

Well in fact Martin, I beg to differ! I think I asked a similar question about 2.2 many years ago and received a reply from Bob. For single games (as opposed to tournament games) there is nothing in the rules which specifies that you have to define your army composition prior to actually setting it out. A relatively brief scan of the 3.0 rules doesn't seem to identify any change. it depends how friendly your "friendly" games are, I suppose. What normally happens in our games is that one of us provides a matched pair, and then says something like "i fancy trying the Carthaginians with the two elephant option against the Polybians with the 3Ax option", how do you feel about trying that?". There may be a bit of negotiation: " If you are not using the auxiliary option, do you mind if I use the Gauls as war band rather than auxilia?", but these are just to try to produce a game of interest on both sides of the board. There is little point in playing a friendly game if one player is seriously disgruntled with his lot from the outset. But having said all of that, there is no mention in the rules of how or when armies are decided, but there is a definite sequence in the deployment section which dictates when the armies are set out, and no indication of when the army is actually defined. Scott Fair enough.....no mention in the rules. Friendlies is friendlies.....you are absolutely correct that there is no hard and fast rule. Players can choose to run it any way they like. If, however, someone were to have attended any of the tournaments that you and I have played at over the last ten years or so with a multi-choice army which he then varied at each deployment * what would the result have been? How would the 'GM' (or whatever term you prefer) have ruled? And if I run out a dodgy army combination in a friendly/non-tournament game which will be hard pressed from the word "go", my aim is not to end up 'seriously disgruntled from the outset' but to give my opponent as hard a run for his money as possible. Horses for courses, I guess. Martin * especially a high aggression one, with a chance to view the enemy before choosing composition most games.

Do you choose Beer or Wine before or after terrain deployment?

Do you choose Beer or Wine before or after terrain deployment? If you are playing with warband, a few pints before the mad charge and then wine when you loot the Roman camp! You won't notice the terrain. In fact you probably won't notice whether you win or lose. Cheers, Simon

On the subject of terrain,do players using armies with a choice of defending territory stick to one choice or vary choice from game to game/opposing army?
I always thought it sporting to choose your army prior to set up of any game be it dba or other be it just a "friendly" or a tournament.

You have both described the true 'spirit' of game. Cheers,

Well, having a fixed army composition before placing terrain isn't specified in the rule ! We often choose our options when deploying, while drinking cold beer The defender places the terrain, then the attacker chooses his table edge and drinks wine/beer while the defender deploys. The attacker then deploys, adapting his army to terrain/ennemy. That's how we play it and no one feels cheated.
