I need help further understanding this, "Each feature is diced for. A score of 1-4 directs that it must be placed within that quarter". Which quarter? A roll of 5 lets the defender choose, but does the defender pick an initial quarter to start in? I have been playing this wrong.

I need help further understanding this, "Each feature is diced for. A score of 1-4 directs that it must be placed within that quarter". Which quarter? A roll of 5 lets the defender choose, but does the defender pick an initial quarter to start in? I have been playing this wrong. The idea is that you number each of the quarters of the table from your left nearest you and then go round clockwise with 4 being the quarter nearest to you on your right as defender. I find it useful to number them out loud so that you and your opponent are clear which is what number. You then select one of your terrain pieces, starting with compulsory ones and throw for it. A 1-4 means it goes in that quarter. If the D6 is a 5 the defender chooses any quarter to put it in (assuming there is space) and if it is a 6 the attacker chooses. Note that the attacker is allowed to pick a crowded square where there may not be room and so the terrain piece is then discarded. The attacker only chooses the quarter - the defender still decides where it goes within that quarter. Hope this makes sense! Simon

Divide the battlefield into 4 equal parts = 4 quarters. See diagram 1A. Quarter 1 is to your left, Quarter 2 is to your left against the opposite edge, quarter 4 is to your right, quarter 3 is opposite that quarter. So now you have 4 quarters marked on the board. No need to actually mark them, just do it in your mind.
You have already selected your required and your optional terrain pieces. Place these by the side of the battlefield. You pick up a piece, and then you roll a die.
Roll a die, if you come up with 1 you put the terrain feature in quarter number one. If you roll 2 do you put it in quarter 2. If you roll the three you put the terrain in quarter 3, if you roll a 4, you put the terrain in Quarter 4.
So, that leaves the dice showing a 5, then you put the terrain piece in any quarter you want, if there is space. Now, if you roll a 6, your opponents gets to pick the quadrant. However, you still get to put down the terrain piece where you want it. You do this for every terrain piece.
Does that help?
by the time I finished this, I find that Simon had already provided his excellent answer. I'll just leave mine anyway after all the time it took me :-)

... and it is good to have two answers agreeing!
