Hi All
Last query for today, probably
Just been asked to re read the rules for overlap
I get the over lap by enemies in left-left or right-right corner to corner and not in close combat
If three units of blades lined up frontally against each other and the middle combat was resolved first and is a loss but not half or less than half of its opponent one blade recoils and the other pursues
The other two combats now give an advantage to the side that won the first combat because the element that pursued now overlaps by mutual flank edge contact the units to the left and right even though it is itself still in contact with an enemy to the front
We always thought no advantage was given as it was still itself in combat and thought it had to be in that position without an enemy in combat with it
Last thought if unit in mutual flank edge contact is only partially so do they still both count as overlapping each other
Sorry to ask such a straightforward question but it amazes me what I don't know sometimes

........... If three units of blades lined up frontally against each other and the middle combat was resolved first and is a loss but not half or less than half of its opponent one blade recoils and the other pursues The other two combats now give an advantage to the side that won the first combat because the element that pursued now overlaps by mutual flank edge contact the units to the left and right even though it is itself still in contact with an enemy to the front ........ This is correct, Baldie. It is also the case that elements which are only partially in mutual flank edge to flank edge contact count as ovelapping each other. It may help to have a look at fig 16c. Auxilia B overlaps Psiloi Y and, as the notes explain, would do so even if it was in close combat with an enemy element.

Note that the Diagrams are nice, but the rules are also quite good:) Maybe hard to find things, so takes careful reading. See the text below on page 10, second paragraph in "Combat to Front and to Flank ..."
"An element not in frontal close combat but in mutual right-to-right or left-to-left front corner contact with any enemy element except Psiloi or Scythed Chariots overlaps this; even if it is exposed by a frontal opponent having recoiled, fled or been destroyed that bound.
Any enemies in any mutual flank edge contact overlap each other whether in close combat or not. An element can overlap 2 enemy elements on opposite flanks."
