I recently purchased and read "One Hour Wargames" by Neil Thomas. A very different approach to wargaming for those with limited time, space and resources.
There are rules for Ancient, Dark Age, Medieval, Pike and Shot, Horse and Musket, Sabre and Rifle, Machine Age and WW2. These are very simple rules but well thought out and give surprisingly good games. Also included are 30 scenarios which can be played in any era and sections on Campaigns and solo gaming.
Having now played 2 Horse and Musket and 1 Pike and Shot scenario I was impressed and found the games tactically challenging.

Could you give a quick rundown of what mechanisms (base size, army size, how many dice of what sort, etc.) their games use? Not so much as to make Mr. Thomas unhappy, but enough to give us the basic idea?

Not so much as to make Mr. Thomas unhappy, but enough to give us the basic idea? Basing is very flexible but for 15mm + frontage of 4" to 6" is recommended. Depth is rather irrelevant. Armies are 6 units in size. There are no Army lists as such but there is a table where forces can be generated using a D6. Basic D6 is the only die needed and battles are fought on a 3'x3' field. It is an Igougo system. I have already included a couple of house rules for the Pike and Shot as artillery was not included in that section. Hope that helps
