Following the completion of a hamlet and the refurbishing of a second one, I made a number of templates to finish off the work. As you will see from the photos these vary in size and each blend well with the road sections. If you wish to view the old models, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the link. 18thcenturysojourn.blogspot.nl/2017/08/bua-built-up-area-templates.html
At a later date I will make similar templates for ‘dry’ geographical zones.

Very nice work Robert. As you say, the transition between Rd and BUA is almost seamless. Well done.
Cheers,

Looks excellent! Yet more of your work I mean to emulate, one day.
Combines pretty, for that panoramic view of the battlefield, with practical, removal of clutter while the troops get down to imaginary street fighting.

Greg and Mark - thank you both for the kind words.
Strange enough I do not use roads for ancient battles but these do appear on battlefields for the late medieval or gunpowder era games.

These looks awesome. How thick and stiff is the flooring material you use as a base compared to felt and thin mdf?

Bill,
I love this material. From it, I have made road, rivers, waterway, hills, gully and terrain area templates for wood, scrub, enclosures, rocky ground and now BUA.
Add to those listed three game mats of 160 x 80 cm (green, arid and sea) and one of 80 x 80 cm (green).
The material has an upper surface of 2 mm with a 1 mm white ‘waffled’ underside; it is flexible.
Painted with household water-base paint the mats remain flexible enough to bend. My game mats are rolled up and stored and from storage to the game board they lay perfectly flat after a few minutes.
The smaller pieces are partially or totally covered with electrostatic grass sprinkled over white glue. At this stage the pieces become quite stiff, but will bend if improperly stored. This can be corrected by simply bending them back to lay flat.

Compared to felt or MDF, this material is very light, will not fray as felt will nor warp in humid climes. Special tools are not required to cut or shape as scissors or a modelling knife will do the job.
You may find DIY outlets that offer 'leftover' material for a soft price.
Cheers, Robert

Robert,
Scrap pieces of vinyl flooring 1 mm thick with rubber underside. Thanks.
To translate this to the US flooring market: - Does it normally come in squares of a certain size? Or maybe in bigger sheets? - in the river examples you show with the beveled edges, the material cut easily with scissors and shows the underlying material vs the top coloring material.
I have a neighbor who owned a flooring company so I can get his input if I get confused.
Your blog is inspiration to my Ancients Battlefiled Terrain Improvement project.
What about your hamlet buildings? Any source for them? I recall some lovely custom pieces you made.
Also, now that you have completed putting together the new terrain sets, would you have a list of all the terrain by terrain type that has any type of quantity notes? For example, 4 feet of river, 5 feet of roads both in 6 inch sections,

Robert,
Just found your Witcher project buildings. Are they 15mm?

Robert, Just found your Witcher project buildings. Are they 15mm? Bill Bill,
Yes, they are scratch built for 15mm use. A long time ago I had 15mm Hovels but sold them as they were too big for 'my' DBX use.
Over the years and many revisions later, the houses have an elevation close to 15mm, but the frontage and depth is close to 10mm.

The tiles (12"x 12") are heavier and not flexible, but they are ideal for building camps. Unless the product has changed, I believe these also have a sticky tar-like underside covered with paper.
The material I have came off a roll and is much like the middle one pictured. www.google.nl/search?q=floor+vinyl+roll&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiyuOO8ncrVAhUSJ1AKHRbcAaoQ_AUICigB&biw=1536&bih=770#imgrc=cPf9h4Ugar5j7M:&spf=1502284405564 As to your last request ... and you need this when?
Give me some time to think how this should be organized as this will involve a lot of writing and quite a number of photo sessions. My next two weeks will be spent training and giving workshops plus a long weekend in Belgium, but after the 22nd I should be ready to work on this. This should be fun.
Cheers,
