I am interested in seeing what system people use when they play a solo game. I use De Bellis Solitarus. I have however made a few subtle changes which I feel helps with realism.
I also use my own system as follows, usually for my English Civil War games.
I always grade my non player general. If not playing an historical general whose attributes are known I grade the general by die role. 1-2 Poor 3-4 Average 5-6 Above average. During the non player turn I work out 3 possible courses of action. I then role a die.
If the General is Poor 1-2-3 He uses the worst action, 4-5, the second best, 6 The best. Average general 1-2 worst 3-4 second best 5-6 Best. If the General is above average 1 Worst 2-3 Second best 4-5-6 Best.
I find this system works well as you can plan to exploit a poor generals weakness only to be thwarted when he suddenly pulls off a master stroke! Or when against an above average general he suddenly makes a blunder!

I use Impetus or Hail Caesar depending on the style of play I want to do for the battle. Both play well solo, just depends on how much time I want to spend on a scenario and the style of play I want to have. I like both systems a lot. Impetus tends be fast and furious. Hail Caesar a bit slower and more a game of attrition and planning.
I have never done DBA solo. DBA is my preferred system for tournament games at conventions.

Is that the same as De Bellis Slolitarus? No. 'De Bellis Solitarius' was by Chad La Mons, and was designed for DBA 1.1. (I have a feeling that it is usable for later versions.) fanaticus.org/DBA/variants/vardbs.html'Solo DBA' was developed by a third party (myself) from 'De Bellis Solitarius'. The version on the old Fanaticus site is the one intended for 2.2. fanaticus.org/DBA/variants/SoloDBAVer2dot2.pdfThere is also an unfinished version for 2.2+ knocking around on my PC hard drive, and on the Yahoo group for Solo DBA. I have been experimenting with One Hour Wargames - much more subtle than it at first appears and has led to some nailbitting games. The experience has reminded me of my first Ancient games using the original Barker pre WRG rules!

The experience has reminded me of my first Ancient games using the original Barker pre WRG rules! I have just started One Hour Wargames and find it very clever. I have however adapted the Pike and Shot and Horse and Musket rules. Pike and Shot to include Artillery and Dragoons. Horse and Musket Infantry attack columns for Napoleonic area. For both I have built in simple Leadership rules to enable me to use some personality figures I have.

Over Christmas I have been looking at that Solo DBA approach that Cromwell outlined. Well thought through, and with a few tweaks very easy to adopt for DBA 3.0.

Hi, I know this thread is a little ancient, but I was curious if a variant of the DBA Solo rules had been written for 3.0? I am playing HOTT (I run wargames campaigns out of my Dungeons & Dragons campaign world, as I'm inspired by Tony Bath and David Arneson in that regards). Most of my games are solo. I've recently started using a rules variant called DBA3HOTT2. Having a blast learning DBA! From looking at Piyan Glupak's rules (which are obtainable via Wayback Machine), it looks like the rules would work? I'm using the old solo rules by La Mons. I'm just not experienced enough at DBA 3 yet to know if I'm missing something or not. Thanks!
