Umayyad vs. Alan The Alani that settled the northern Caucuses region found themselves in conflict with the Umayyad and later the Abbasid dynasties.
Battle reports with photos can be found at the blog. dbagora.blogspot.com/2020/01/umayyad-vs-alan.html

Another history lesson for me, thanks!
I know so little about this time and place.

Having read in a post some while back that in DBA 3 that having more that 4 LH was a no-no as they became such a pip drain due to fleeing, how much of a factor were pips in that second battle?
Particularly with a single pip die and a doubled army.

Having read in a post some while back that in DBA 3 that having more that 4 LH was a no-no as they became such a pip drain due to fleeing, how much of a factor were pips in that second battle? Particularly with a single pip die and a doubled army.
After posting the battle reports to the blog, I no longer have need of retaining my notes, however, it just so happens … (Alani casualties are noted in red).
Umayyad / score Alani / score 1 2 1 2 6 1 3 5 2 4 1 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 LH, LH 4 LH 1 6 1 LH 5 7 2 4 8 Ps 6 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9 LH 5 Sp 6 10 Ps, Cv 6 Cv, Kn, Cv 6 11 Kn, Kn, Ax 5 12
The first hour (4 turns) the Umayyad took advantage of the Alani misfortune and take the offensive. Despite a few low pip scores the Alani brought the score even, 6 – 6 by turn 10. The following turn the Umayyad were able to hold their momentum resulting in a narrow victory of 8 - 7.
The rule of thumb regarding the number of LH is possibly sound advice for tournament play, but refighting historical battles, I find the larger single commands demonstrate a huge improvement over the standard game of twelve elements.

So a slow start for the Alani, but then a mix of better rolls while the Umayyad didn't roll as well.
Interesting comeback.

With the double armies/single PIP die, those endgame low PIP rolls must have particularly frustrated the Numidian player. Particularly with a pair of PIP hungry elephants and a large lead.
Ordinarily a more mobile army would presumably have the advantage wen the lines fragment giving them the chance to choose matchups and pickoff more isolated elements.
Interesting, as always.

Interesting, as always. goragrad, It was a near victory for the Numidian, but on the other hand it demonstrated three key points for the Roman; the use of reserves, regrouping scattered units and never giving up.

Thanks, Paulisper, Following our game and the number of photos taken by Jan, I decided to refurbish the Arab army collection.
Of the ten in my collection, a number of these have never left their boxes and after some thought have decide to reorganise them as five armies of two commands each. Refurbishing them will mean new topcoats, turbans, shields and banners consistent with their type.

timurilank What make are your Nikephorian Byzantines ? The Nikephorian are 15mm Old Glory Byzantine 7th – 13th century. I selected foot and mounted from the latter half as these had teardrop shields. BZ2 Psiloi archers/javelinmen (ideal for psiloi and auxilia) BZ16 Heavy infantry BZ17 Archers BZ15 Klibanophoroi BZ19 Heavy cavalry BZ20 Light cavalry (extras are useful for other nations) The packaging was ideal to build two commands. Paint two, sell one and your single command is paid for. (early Phoenician tip)

The Fatamid Egyptians are complete and numbering 28 elements with options they are ready for battle. I will post a description of the project at the blog tomorrow and add photos of the Fatamid later next week.
At the moment the Dynastic Bedouin are on the work bench awaiting their treatment. These are two command, each of 12 elements plus 3 Kurdish allies (those 3Kn will be useful) and should take less time to paint. With a bit of luck, these should be ready for our next punch up on the 18th of March, Dynastic Bedouin vs. the Fatamid.
