Not my era but 3Bd seems to cover what has been said about them. Jim 3Bd, I love them, fast and dangerous...

But too powerful compared to 4bd.
Which could be corrected by applying the shield wall side support rule to Roman blades not just spear units.

Right, but hey, I didn't write the rules. (And those fast as lightning 3Bd heavy Sea Peoples were the reason why I reached number two in my first DBA tournament.) (I would reduce their CF to +4, so that they are even weaker than Ax when in BG.)

My group in Salerno is using the following factors and modifications: 4Ax 4-3 -1vs Ps LH 3-4 no quik kill vs Kn and no rear support Pk 4-4 and are double base of 8 figs, rear support +2/+1 Janissaries as 8Bw double base the 4Ax Samnite and Almughavares are 3Bd So after several games everithing seems more balanced.

one cannot help feel that 3.0 generally and not just this conundrum has evolved from trying to please too many people and trying to 'correct' perceived errors from previous editions. I understand why but no system is perfect... I like DBA as a concept and happy to play 'on my own' but it feels like a backdoor DBM/DBMM/7th ruleset now

Strange:
I am "one". I some how don't feel that way.
The perceived errors from previous editions were perceived by many. They needed correction. The narrative created by DBA 3 is superior to previous versions with very little addition of complexity.
The stupid geometric ploys allowed by earlier editions have been eliminated. No new ones have arisen... and this is with direct challenges to detractors... for 10 years.
The argument you advance is one that is rather old and failed. We went round and round with it in 2012-2014. It has been settled I think decisively.
As far as a back door to 7th edition or DBM? I'm scratching my head. One could argue that it has a few concepts from DBMM... but it really doesn't resemble DBMM. I have played DBMM...though not much. I see little resemblance. Thank goodness for that.
One could argue that DBA 3 has similarities with DBR. I agree with this.
The only real disappointment with DBA 3 comes from the death of the tournament scene at major conventions in the US. This was caused by personality issues with the folks that ran the circuit.
The tournament scene in England and elsewhere remains strong and vibrant after 10 years of play.
The proof in in the pudding...
Oh, and as to no system being perfect...
Watch this space!

While balancing is an issue and while there always is (and has been) a discussion on what troops should be what type, I really like the Fast/Solid differentiation. With Blades, there may be an issue of Fast Blades being too good. With Warbands, I find the differentiation absolutely great; even though the Fast type is much better. With Auxilia, the differentiation is also very welcome, but the Solid type lacks a bit of staying power. Fast and Solid Bow are also a good idea, since tribal archers and drilled mass-archers are quite different things. Fast Pikes are strange and I agree that they should probably be Auxilia in most cases. But overall, nothing that is really problematic in friendly play. And competitive play does not interest me.
While historical accuracy is always debatable, I find that the Fast/Solid differentiation gives more interesting, more involving games.
