This year's SoA sponsored tournament is confirmed for Saturday 4th March (registration 09:30-09:50; start at 10:00am), as part of the Hammerhead Show, Newark Showground, for the first time in its history and entries are now open. This year it will again be a 15mm matched-pairs tournament, played with v3 rules, with all armies & terrain provided. It will incorporate, also for the first time, 6 rounds of games and will be completed in one day, as usual. The theme this year is 'Battles of the Biblical Age'. Can those who are interested in entering please either pay £10 directly by BACS (and email me to let me know that you've done this) to: Account name: P M Murgatroyd Account Number: 51460366 Sort Code: 40-22-24 Or send a cheque, along with their name, email and address details, to: Paul Murgatroyd, 9 Northfield Avenue, Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire, LN2 2FB This serves as an official tournament fee and includes entry to the show. Any questions, please feel free to email me on: pmmurgatroyd@aol.com We have a ceiling of entries (due to popular demand, we've managed to put on two more tables and thus increase the number of places by 4 to a max of 20 ;-)) and last year, places sold out in less than three weeks, so don't delay... Further details of the Hammerhead Show can be found here: fanaticus.org/discussion/showthread.php?p=203738#post203738 and here: www.hammerheadshow.co.uk/index.htmlRegards P.

The phrase "The North begins at Watford" pre dates the M1 Is it not 'North of the Watford Gap'? Not the same thing.

The phrase "The North begins at Watford" pre dates the M1 Is it not 'North of the Watford Gap'? Not the same thing. The phrase probably varies with date and location.
I can remember "the North begins at Watford" from the first half of the 1960s, then it was associated with the M1 and its sign.
The Watford Gap is geographical, not an actual place (town etc.), so would not necessarily appear on maps from those days. For those who do not know it, it is a gap in a line of hills where the railway, road, river and canal all pass through the gap in very close proximity.
David Constable
P.S. - If the phrase pre-dates the M1, there might have been a sign on the A1 (Roman road) which said Watford and the North.

Ah but will you be wearing your 'lucky trousers' again? Won't make any difference. There is a house rule that no one is allowed to win the cup for a second time.

I'm considering going for the 'no trousers' look, as the distraction might put my opponents off their game......but what with the restraining order n all......maybe not. M
