Mantinea supports the view that hoplite armies should not have to deploy within the game before fighting. The Allies courteously stood back and let the Spartans deploy before joining battle. I once did a refight in BBDBA with a 2.5-metre long table in which things turned out differently (https://wordpress.com/post/paulhhodson.wordpress.com/3483). Excellent and enjoyable read, thanks Paul. Really well thought out and developed. If there were proper emojis available, I'd give you a medal.

I think we ask a bit too much of DBA3 to try and recreate battles such as Marathon, where one army deployed in an unorthodox manner. This is best left to scenario specific rules (e.g. the central 3 elements are -1 CF or something similar). Much better off looking at battles like Delium, Mantinea (or even Leuctra as DBA allows for the Theban deep phalanx) in the hoplite era. Thinning the line just doesn't seem plausible with 12 v 12 and flanks too vulnerable once you make armies uneven.
Back to Tactica, from memory you didn't have that many more multi-based units to maneuver than DBA has elements. But you were allowed to move all of them on your turn. The DBA PIP roll, though swingy, does provide the game tension and can allow a weaker player or army some chance.
Cheers

DBA only has trouble re-creating certain battles because the rules are wrong or something is missing. Sooo…we can either shrug our shoulders and plough on blindly, knowing that something is wrong, or do something about it, with House Rules, until the next version of DBA corrects things. “An historical set of rules that claims to be based on history, that can’t reproduce famous historical battles, isn’t very historical is it.” I cannot believe that DBA 3.0, in it's present form, will still be in use a 100, 50, or even 20 years from now, just as WRG 6th & 7th Editions, DBA 1.0, DBA 1.1, DBA 2.0, and DBA 2.2 are still in wide usage.

I totally agree Stevie.
But...who is the final arbiter on such recommended changes? As someone said recently, it appears to be more about whose idea it is rather than the idea itself.

Yes, but if it gets "ignored"...?

Oh, the sheep…er…I mean players, will follow anything once it is written down and published. After all, they blindly follow and worship all of Phil Barker’s guff…no matter how ridiculous. Alternatively, use the following maxim:- “Everyone is allowed their own opinion…but mine is the one that’s right!”…ha, ha, ha.

Yes, well, we can but try...and continue to try...and one day prevail.
