Last weekend I attended the inaugural DBA tournament to be held at BrisCon. Now that I've had time to gather my thoughts here's a report detailing how I fared. Unfortunately, I neglected to capture any images of my 11 games. However, I'm sure that others did take photos and will post them.
Day 1's theme was dedicated to armies with at least 1 El as part of the army. I went with the Numidians (II/40) and fielded 1x3Cv (G), 1xEl, 4xLH, 2x4Bd and 4xPs.
My first game was against Cameron Unwin who went with the Later Carthaginians (II/32a). This resulted in a win for me, 5-1.
Game 2 was against David Pilkington who was fielding one of the 3 Marian armies (II/49). This was a very tight affair with me coming out victorious 4-3.
The game prior to lunch saw me up against another Later Carthaginian force, generaled by Andrew Ross. Unfortunately the Numidians succumbed to the might of Carthage 2-4.
After lunch Leigh Dunn's Marians lined up against me and it came down to some general on general action which saw the Marians triumphant, 3-3G.
Finally, in the 5th game I was able to break away from the Carthaginian/Marian vortex. David Lawrence brought an Other Hindu army (III/10c) to the fray, and once again it resulted in a a very tight game. David was victorious 3-5.
The last game of of the day saw me matched against Mark Baker's Meriotic Kushites (I/58). A lot was riding on this game as it could have an effect on the standings at the end of the day. As is my want, I threw a spanner into the works and came away with a victory 4-2.
At the end of Day 1 I came away with a win/loss ratio of 3-3. I was pretty happy with that.
Day 2's armies had to have at least 1 element of Artillery to qualify. My army of choice were the Abbasid Arabs (III/37b) and consisted of 1x3Cv (Gen), 3x3Cv, 1xLH, 2x3Bd 2xSp, 1xArt and 2x4Bw.
Game 1 saw me matched against Alberto Estruch, who was running Middle Imperial Romans West (II/64a). I was able to begin the day with a win, 4-0.
The 2nd game was against Andrew Ross, who fielded Burgundian Ordnance (IV/85a). I was able to avenge my previous day's loss and overcome Andrew 3G-1.
Next up was Mark Baker and his Bosporans (II/25). Mark was able to redeem his loss to me with a thumping win 0-4.
Game 4 saw me up against Tony Lisle's WOTR army (IV483a). I was able to come away with a 4-0 win.
The last game of the weekend saw me up against David Pilkington's Marians once again. Despite the 4-1 casualty rate it was a very tight victory for me.
So, out of 11 games I ended up with 7 victories. Many thanks to Chris Humphreys for running a great tournament, to my opponents for providing challenging games and finally, many thanks to the Brisbane based players for welcoming so many of us from interstate.
Cheers,
