Travelling Companion and I are on the train from St Pancras to Chesterfield, on the way to Bakewell. Too late to change armies (or dice) now!

Thanks to the 18 players who turned up to join in the usual Bakewell Open fun and games. Thanks also to Timurilank who provided a painted Lusitanian army as first prize and to Phil Johnson who made up some 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies (and took one of them back with him!!)
The rankings and armies were as follows:
1 Peter Davis 4/54 Scandinavian 2 Phil Johnson 2/74a Palmyrian 3 Paul Murgatroyd 3/10b Rajput 4 Mark Johnson 3/28 Carolingian 5 Richard Pulley 4/61 Italian Condottia 6 Will Whyler 4/82a French Ordonnance 7 Rob Rush 2/64 Middle Imperial Roman 8 John Saunders 1/32c Chinese 700-480BC 9 Tamara Fordham 4/23 Feudal English 10 Paul Hodson 3/70 Tuareg 11 Tom Whitehead 1/56a Kyrenean Greek 12 Colin Alcock 4/13b Medieval German 13 Terry Mahon 2/7 Later Achaemenid Persian 14 Andy Wheeldon 3/10c Hindu 15 Tim Rogers 3/66 Fatimid Egyptian 16 Stevie Andrews 2/32a Carthagenian 17 Keith Murphy 4/59b Samurai 18 Baldie 2/43 Maccabean
An interesting range of armies - and all beautifully presented.
Next Bakewell event will be the Matched pairs in September.
Cheers Simon

I feel Frank would be rightly proud of the Maccabeans lack of fighting prowess. Fab day as ever, cheers to all.

Dear Simon and dear all, thanks for an excellent day's gaming. My Tuareg (camel + fast warband) army brought me joy - but as much defeat as victory. Wins against Terry (I managed to get the camels lined up against his Achaemenid Sp), against Baldie with Frank Shaw's Maccabees (I got in amongst the Pk - but only after my general, who'd been hard flanked, had a very lucky escape) and against Colin's Medieval Germans (who threw a 1 to make the Ploughs wet, followed by 1s and 2s for movement throughout). Outmanoeuvred and beaten by Mark Johnson and Richard (both with Kn+Bd armies).
My most exciting game was when I lost to Paul M's Rajputs. None of my troops liked the look of his two elephants, so we tried to filter round on the right flank. Psiloi on a difficult hill made this harder than I would have wished, but I was making progress there when he used 4 PIPs to slam the elephants into my LCm rearguard. One El element (the general) hit it on the front, the other on its left flank. The LCm did not last long; the El general that had been to its front pursued. I countercharged the general in its flank with a Cm, bringing in another in overlap. The El turned to face me creating a 2-deep column of elephants. My modifier of 3 faced his of 4; if I'd scored more the elephants would have exploded mutually and I'd have won the game; it would have been a story I'd have been boasting of tomorrow to my 15-month old granddaughter; sadly the odds prevailed.
Things I noticed in this, my first English open tournament: 1) Kn+Bd armies seemed to predominate; 2) aggression was low. Though the Tuareg are only Ag 1, I was only able to invite enemies to enjoy my ever-shifting Dunes in two battles out of six.
Looking forward to Britcon!
Paul

Paul It was great to see you back up in Bakewell Paul. And, had there been a sartorial elegance award, you would have won it by a country mile!! Cheers Simon
