Congrats to the top players today…the results may follow from organisers, so I won’t steal their thunder yet…
I took Medieval Scandinavians, Danish version - a few Knights and cavalry, some solid spearmen and some obudshaer (nimble warriors with cleaving weapons or crossbows).
1. VS the same, under Martin M. My obudshaer landed and caused a bit of rear echelons-chaos before being swamped, and then the main lines clashed. Some flukey combat luck went very much my way, giving a 6-3 win.
2. A tight game against Lithuanians (cavalry and light horse) under Andrew W. Swirling melees were the order of the day…my right wing did well, and stopped a large band of light cavalry in their tracks, but some poor combat by my general and his knights saw him overrun by horse-archers, and we lost the game 4g to 4…very tense.
3. Invading Richard’s Hungary (with French ally). The obudshaer pretty much won this game, shooting down a few knights and overrunning enemy archers for a 4-0 win.
4. Invading again, vs Paddy M. (Ottomans). A protracted fight around, but not in, a central wood went initially very well for the Danes, who cleared away some of the opposing left flank. We were 3-0 up at this stage, I think. However, Paddy didn’t give up…and transferred mounted troops across the battlefield to snatch a 4-3 win…star player!!. Great game…and soooooo close.

Having lived abroad till I just now retired, and subject to all the Covid travel restrictions, this was my first UK DBA tournament for nearly 4 years. A pleasure to see old friends - and Phil, thanks for the lift to the station. I made plenty of mistakes with my Lithuanians (including slow play which stopped Colin O'Shea from having a deserved victory; though the 1's he continuously rolled for movement didn't help him either). Looking forward to the next one!

Three draws and one win from the 40 minute group games got me into the playoff for third place! My Medieval Germans then faced Paul C’s Medieval Germans. Two similar armies fighting each other often makes for a dull game, but adding an Early Polish ally just gave me an edge which helped turn the game... and I didn’t keep throwing ones for PIPS. Hoorah! The sun had set and we played most of the game in the light from Mark’s phone in the now gloomy Victorian casemate.
Good to see Paul H back on the circuit.
Thank you PAWS. Nice trophy.
