Wow, stevie, that looks quite comprehensive! So, if every one of these has 3, 4 or five enemys, this means that about 20% of all games are affected by this problem! Future DBA really should do something for lighter units, like discussed in many other threads. And maybe it should be mostly minor changes (elegant ones), from terrain placement to adding some bonuses for LH and Ax or different outcome moves ... I do have a lot more thoughts on this subject, but I’ve already dragged this thread waaaaay off topic. So I’m going to start a new thread in the “House Rules” section, and we can all have a good old fashioned stand up blazing argument about it there, like we should.

...oh, die meisten Armeen in Stievies Liste sind meine Favoriten. Ich bevorzuge auch die Azteken, aber ich denke, Azteken sind tatsächlich eine aggressive Armee und müssen angreifend sein ... So, vodnik, really, most of the armies in stevie's list are among your favourite armies. At a first glance one could think that is somehow masochistic, but I admit, I'd rather say "I support the underdog." Only think of my Norse Irish III 46... mostly Ax...

So I have one for the group to puzzle over:
Are there any armies that can field 12 different troop types? If not what is the maximum number of troop types in a single army (no alllies) and what are they?

III/39 Late T'ang and Five Dynasties has 13 troop types available by my count, but can only get nine of them on the field at once.
III/62b Southern Sung are similar; they also have 13 troop types nominally available, but I think can only get up to eight unit types actually fielded.
IV/4b Feudal French have 12 types available but can also field eight max.
So no one can actually field 12 different troop elements. Now, the actual max that can be fielded is an interesting question...

paddy@ ; if you play a big battle Game, do you ask that question 3 time Brain Boru@: i like the Irish but not to play Triumph; it is more fantasy figting vikings comming by ships but fighting mounted, no joke...

I count eight armies which have 11 types in their lists. Of these, I think II/4e Other Chinese can get to 10 types on the field: Cv gen, HCh, LH, 4Cb, 4Ax, 4Bd, 3Bd, 3Cb, 7Hd, 5Hd.
III/66 Fatimid can get to 9 types, so can IV/43c Later Hungarian and IV/61 Italian Condotta. The rest are all 8 or less.
So, 10 types on the field is probably the maximum. There are 18 more armies that have 10 types in their list - I'll leave it to someone else to figure out which ones might be able to hit the max!
(I think I/60c Achaemenids can field 10 types - LCh general, Cv, LH, Immortals as 4Bw, other archers as a mix of 8Bw and 3Bw, 3Ax, Sp, and levies as mixed 7Hd and Ps.)

I love them, too. Mounted! Must have been sea horses, then... (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)

I wonder if there are different armies of exactly the same composition, and if there are even some that meet on the battlefield?

I wonder if there are different armies of exactly the same composition, and if there are even some that meet on the battlefield? Off the top of my head, II/26 (Later Sarmatian) and II/78 (African Vandal) can have the same composition. (12x3Kn or 11x3Kn + 1xLH or 11x3Kn + 1xPs). Getting a matched pair might take a bit longer.

I'm sure some of the Successor armies could manage it...

Earliest pair I could find listed as enemies is I/4c (Hurrian) and I/31a (Neo-Hittite). LCh General, 5 x 3Ax and 6 x Ps.
