Great fun today and well done, Si Wilson, on his usual efficient organisation across the event. Top table was stacked and it was a high quality competition across the board.
My newly painted boys, the Illyrians and Thracians looked pretty, but couldn’t fight for sh@t… played 12, W1, D1, L10 😱😂 it wasn’t even a knife at a gun fight…

Loved today and even got some wins. My lads did seem to do better when commanded by others and with aggression of 3 never placed their terrain at all.

Looked pretty, but couldn't fight for toffee; played 6, W1, L5. Fortunately, I played three times with them and three times against them, so my personal tally was 4 wins and 2 defeats.

Was anyone so gauche as to actually win or anything? Err.... That would be me. Thank you once again Simon for hosting and organising the tournament. Especially for the tweak to the terrain rules. Things like that keep the game fresh. It was good to hear so much laughter in the room. The day was an excellent combination of serious yet lighthearted gaming. Finally thank you to my opponents who managed to keep smiling despite some outrageous luck on my part. It will be a while before I can look Mark in the face (after shooting his pike General stone dead with the first shot of the game). Ditto Baldie, whose LH General was unstoppable in my hands, and Pete, who was completely and comprehensively out pipped. After hubris comes nemesis though. My fate is sealed. Stephen

Thanks to everyone for turning up at Bakewell for another very good-natured and energetic tournament.
Congratulations to Stephen Finn for coming first and winning his games in all six rounds and so taking away the figure packs kindly donated by Alternative Armies.
2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th places all scored equal points on the initial scoring system and these ties (and some others further down the table) were resolved by resorting to sum of opponents' scores.
Rankings were as follows:
1 Stephen Finn Cilician Armenian IV/2 2 Mark Skelton Mapuche IV/84a 3 Pete Duckworth Samurai IV/59a 4 Richard Pulley South Welsh III/19c 5 Ken Gordon Guti Revolt I/46 6 Phil Johnson Lydian I/50 7 Tom Whitehead Thracian I/48 8 Colin O’Shea Cilician Armenian IV/2 9 Andy Wheeldon Celtiberian II/39 10 Simon Wilson Dacian II/52 11 Keith Murphy Samurai IV/59a 12 Mark Johnson Dacian II/52 13 Paul Murgatroyd Illyrian I/47 14 Robert Rush Guti Revolt.1/46 15 Baldie Paionian I/63 16 Neil Mason Guti Revolt 1/46 17 John Saunders Early Japanese Yahoi 1/64a 18 Stevie Andrews Dacians II/52
Dacians
I look forward to seeing as many as possible back in Bakewell for the Midland Open on 10 June.
Cheers

Yeh, likewise Tom won three and lost three (all wins playing against the Thracians) to finish seventh. Interestingly, I also won three (the only win with the Illyrians down to outrageous good luck) and drew one, but ended up 6 places below him - go figure… 😳 P

Well, that was a much more interesting tournament than I expected after reading the initial advertising. At first, I thought; lots of difficult hills, lots of auxilia struggling to fight in bad going, lots of draws. However, on the day I found myself conducting bad going combat in just one game.
I only wargame maybe once a month so took the opportunity to play a few games recently using the Bakewell terrain placement rules. I realised that despite the requirement for 3 difficult hills the gaming boards could be surprisingly open, that winning the terrain would be crucial and that, instead of taking my Celtiberians or Nabataeans which were my initial choices, I should take a standard balanced army with elements comfortable in open terrain and others needing bad going. Hence the Cilician Armenian (IV/2) that I arrived with containing four spears from the optional spear/auxilia list (I think Stephen chose 3 and 3... perhaps that is where I went wrong!).
My first game was against Paulisper’s Illyrians. I won the terrain and placed the perfect arrangement for my army which was the opposite of what the Illyrians wanted. I lined my spears up against his bravely advancing auxilia in open terrain (all good so far). I then launched my knight general (shouldn’t be a problem) onto an auxilia element on the end of his line and… suddenly the game completely changed in character. My general died on a 6-1. Paulisper started throwing 5s and 6s for PIPS, I couldn’t move and the game was soon over to the sound of whooping Illyrians slamming doors. In the following games my Cilicians did better than I did. I don’t think other players expected to meet knights in this tournament. After one swift defeat by Claudius who was using my army to completely thrash his own south Welsh (in his choice of terrain placement), we played a second game… with another story line. 7 games in the day!
It is always a pleasure to game at Bakewell where I meet players from all points of the UK compass. I had some excellent tabletop tussles using a range of armies and every opponent was fun to play. Thank you, Simon, and well done Stephen – 6 wins is a huge achievement!

My newly painted boys, the Illyrians and Thracians looked pretty, but couldn’t fight for sh@t… played 12, W1, D1, L10 😱😂 it wasn’t even a knife at a gun fight… P Ha!…I did worse than that…1 draw and 11 defeats! Some players even inquired if I was deliberately trying to lose! This was not the case, as I can perhaps describe with a couple of examples. In the first game my Dacians with allied Sarmatians faced masses of Welsh 3Lb. I concentrated all my forces on my right wing, with the Sarmatian 3Kn’s moving down the table edge. Meanwhile, I advanced my 3Wb’s into the bow’s TZ so that they couldn’t concentrate their shooting, except at the ends, as their line was longer than mine. My CF 3-1 against their CF 2 meant they only had 4 chances out of 36 of scoring a double…yet did so 3 times in just three rounds of shooting. And all this was before I even reached their uphill line! Result: a 4-0 defeat. (It was suggested to me that I should have stayed out of bow range, in order to draw them down off the hill…but my opponent could have just sat still, resulting in a rather unsatisfying draw. Besides, I don’t fight that way)My fourth battle was against Baldie, who used my Dacians while I used his. My weaker mounted in my centre moved towards his stronger 3Kns, and when they advanced I fell back leaving them in danger of some 3Wb up a hill on my right wing. So they couldn’t charge uphill, or my mounted would flank them, and couldn’t advance on my weaker mounted, or the 3Wb would flank them. Thus they were neutralized and out of the battle. This left me free to concentrate all the rest of my forces on my left wing. However, even when fighting like-with-like (i.e Ps v Ps, 3Wb v 3Wb), it was me that got doubled, and Baldie free to roll-up my battleline. In some battles I even planned to subsequent move my Skirmishing group to an advantageous position into difficult terrain, only to roll a ‘1’ for my first PIPs! So my tactics were good…but my luck was appalling! Oh well, bad luck can’t last forever, and maybe I’ll be more fortunate next time…

I did try hard not to win Stevie, def think you should have had a pop at that double warband with your general. He may have died as he was sort of flanked but think odd were still in your favour.
