So, I recently got a copy of the DBA 3.0 rules. I haven't tried it out yet, but I have a steppe nomad army that I built for HOTT some years ago which would do just fine for the IV/35 Mongol Conquest list. If I wanted to paint up a historical opponent for them, which of their many enemies would make for the most interesting games?

Against the Mongol Conquest list, I would suggest the army of Jalal ad-Din Khwarazmshah: IV/24a Khwarizmian state Army 1186-1231 AD. Interesting history with a different army to the Mongols, but providing a good match. You can research his history on many sites, but I find this to be one of the best: www.iranicaonline.org/articles/jalal-al-din-kvarazmsahi-mengbirni

Be warned that playing with Mongols in DBA has quite the learning curve - choose plenty of Cv, at least at the beginning, as LH are quite feeble and require some expertise to really use effectively.
Edit: I second IV/24a Khwarezmian State as an interesting army. Plus you can even field an elephant!

Ideally something completely different that provides a challenge to the high-maneuver Mongols.
How about III/62b Southern Sung Chinese? A very different array of troops with a nice chunk of solid Cb, a sprinkling of good foot (3/4Bd or 3Pk if you prefer for one element) and some colourful Art, plus a few Cv (1 of which can be a fire-lance Kn). Blast those pesky Mongols back to Mongolia!
Or III/36 Nan-Chao? A very different array of troops with Cv, Bw, 4Pk, 3Pk, Cb or Wb.
Or III/79 Early Russian with lots of 3Kn, backed up by a few Sp, LH and Bw among other things.
Or a step further... IV/30 Teutonic Orders, with lots of Kn backed up by Sp and Cb among other things. The ultimate West vs East matchup!

I own a Mongol Army. I bought it for WRG 7th edition where it was an all mounted “killer army” but real life intervened and it sat unpainted for 20+ years. Then I got into DBA and converted all my old 7th edition armies to DBA. My Mongols got split into 3 - DBA army for me, one for a mate and one to convert into a Khazar army. Since then the Mongols have sat for 3 years still unpainted.
Why? Well I love the army. I like the figures. I love the history. I can visualise how I want the army to look and the colour pallet. I own a matched pair - the Teutonics.......BUT under DBA the Mongols are pants! Why waste a month painting an army I’ll never use in competition? I also have a Skythian army which is beautiful and a complete favourite but equally bad on the table. So why add another?
The trouble is that DBA seems unfairly biased against LH heavy armies. The solution has been play tested and is simple - LH elements and groups cost half a PIP to move. That simple rule amendment transforms LH from DBA lepers into dangerous contenders. So my advice is either to shelve your Mongol Conquest army and go for something with lots of heavy hitters OR play with the LH moves cost 1/2 PIP rule and then the Mongols can take on any enemy - including Teutonics.

I used to get my arse handed to me by Mongols when I played as ze Germans, they’d swing past, draw out my knights and my screams of “HOLD! HOLD! You @&$#ing idiots HOOOOLD!” would inevitably fall on deaf ears, and off they’d gallop to be picked apart piecemeal. I love knights.

For those that are not interested in competitions, the answer might be easy: Because they are fun to paint, fun to play and provide an interesting challenge.

Im with you on the painting front, they are a joy.

Yes, knights and tactics...that's like putting cordial in your whisky. Some things aren't meant to go together.

And when you do achieve a Mongol victory, either in a social game or a competition, it is so so satisfying!
Took down an Italian Condotta army some years ago, and it still brings a smile to my face.

My liver nearly flipped a kidney.

Ha ha! No, most assuredly not! I'm a big fan of drinking strong peaty single malt scotch neat (and without water). For the 'manly man'. Like knights, you don't mess with them by adding tactics!

At least with Knights the game gets finished quickly. I played a Teutonics vs Danes with gerardus yesterday in homage to Tony’s latest YouTube. Second bound, charge......game over by end of fourth bound. Probably spent more time putting out the terrain out and deploying forces than actually playing.
