Game 1 My Bosporans vs Pre Islamic Arabs with allies made up of camels.
I got to defend so no dunes which was good. Dont know if I was lucky or Bill unlucky cos my knights took on camels and light horse with no care in the world. 4-0 win for me in a SOA game
Game 2 Against John's defending Polybian Roman's. Plough and hills filled the table
Poor pip dice from Rome meant my knights got into the blades and did some choppy choppy 4-0 win for me, master of death and destruction now so nothing could stop me
Game 3 Against Steve's Chinese Think I got to defend, took not a single pic which is a new record as I usually remember at least the first couple of games
A cloud appeared on the horizon, a cloud in the shape of four crossbow units Set up badly and didn't get the knights in all game Crossbows and war wagons took out bow, light horse and worried the generals cav Pushed blades and enemy's general back against camp with my spear but had to throw in a LH vs X bows I figured it was better than being shot at. Ended badly, for me at least, with a 2-5 loss for me in another SOA game
That's me out of the cup
Game 4
Vs Chris and his Polybians Got to defend and great pips meant I could worry some spear and cav whilst hiding from the blades. At one point the Roman general nearly broke through but a couple of hard flanks and I got a 5-0 win even a bow managed to get a Roman blade in the eye which was their best shot all game, or was it
Game 5
Alexander himself took to the field as Jason took a wall of Pike Knights took out two pike before the rest ganged up on em. Things didn't look so good with pikes, Alexander and some cav wanting to take out another base. My general looked for somewhere to hide and sent light horse against psiloi and aux As a cav started to outflank me Alex rounded up some pike and decided to show his lads how to do the deed. My spear bravely stepped back, my two bow fresh from success at killing a Roman blade chanced their arm and moved to get one last shot off. Would you believe it the crack shots hit Alexander in the eye to secure a 5-3 win for me
The plate was in reach as me and Colin faced each other in tie game
Game 6 Vs Colin's Palmyrans who had their own knights
All or nothing kind of guy me so in went knights who took out a blade. A bit of you slap me I slap you went on as Colin confident in his skills decided to kill me with just half his army. I threw in LH against his Knight general hoping to get lucky but it was not to be, a bow took out an enemy bow at least 4-2 win for Colin, needed a bit more luck and poss could have got a win but was out played and out rolled
Happy with 4 wins and each game was great with many being closer than score would imply, funny old things your average dice is.
That's average dice not average dice which are all together more average.
Lessons learned, Bosporans like to run down enemy in the open and dont like to see a gun/bow line a dwarf would be proud of.
Gnomes of the day my fast bow, outrageous shot to Alex will live on forever.
Once again great day and a great bunch of peeps, best fun I have had in a school since a certain girl decided the much less bald baldie was the kind of boy she had to get to know better at the first ever red nose day disco.
Florescent socks and a red nose with a Simon le bon hairstyle I was a dish.

Having painted King Arthur’s army recently I took the opportunity of an open tournament to give him an outing. I didn’t like the fact that there were no shooting elements, but a solid line of spears can usually cope with most things. As we could play a different army in the plate competition I also took the Palmyran a list – an old favourite and more balanced army with plenty of bows.
Apart from a slaughtering from Arnaud’s fast blade Chinese army I had a successful morning. That put me into the plate competition in the afternoon, which I don’t normally enjoy as the reduced playing time makes it so frantic, but I had some exciting and close games, particularly against Patrick’s Celtiberians and Baldie’s Bosporans.
Results will be posted soon, I’m sure, but loaded down with trophies and prize armies, the Hampshire car was a fun drive home.
Thanks Alan; I suspect my day wasn’t nearly as much fun as Baldie must have had all those years ago, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks also to Magister Militum for the prizes.

Fun day out.....well worth the early start and long drive. Many thanks to Alan for a smoothly run day... .and to my opponents for putting up with my madly fortunate dice rolls - two enemy Kn/HCh generals destroyed on draws with my humble blades, and another Roman one mobbed by mad littoral Vikings to an early death in bound one.....random!

Successful Herefordshire contingent!
I have been painting some xyston 4Wb, so decided they would form the backbone of my army.
I went for II/30b Galatians, LCh (gen), LCh, 2x3Cv, SCh, 6x4Wb, Ps.
Game 1 saw us up against Matthew's EIR. I deployed with a large wood on my left, the Romans were in a long battle line with their left anchored by auxilia occupying an edifice. I advanced strongly on the right and threw my scythed chariot in against the blade general, to no avail. Fortunately my warband achieved what the chariot could not. The resultant command issues enabled me to stay in the battle whilst the Roman right crept round to outflank me. It was a tight game and could have gone either way with two warband hard flanked against Roman artillery. After a stand in the first such round, the Galatians won through, just!
Game 2, Romans again, late imperial East under Keith's generalship. An edifice running down the centre of the board split the battlefield in two. Woods on my left made getting the right troops into position against an advancing Roman battle line difficult. Warband and Auxilia engaged in the edifice until the scythed chariot found a way in against cataphracts and promptly self-destructed. Fortunately warband had more luck between that and the edifice against blade, and punched a hole that ultimately proved decisive.
Game 3, time travelling to Seljuk Turkey, attacking in a fairly open plain against Tim. Two long fairly even battle lines. A Scythed Chariot once more crumpling against knights on the left, warband ultimately dispatching bows in the centre, whilst Galatian chariotry was lucky to escape the clutches of multiple light horse on the right. Victory number three and group won!
Semi-Final, a repeat of last year's final against Arnaud and Ash. This time they were fielding Spring Dynasty Chinese. The Chinese defended and started peppering the Galatians who had advanced towards the vast expanses of rough in the middle of the board. The Galatians backed off a little and their right was struck by a collection of elements criss-crossing into favourable match ups. On the whole the Chinese came off Best, but their heavy chariot general had bounced backwards. Some minor Galatians juggling and in came the scythed chariot to die familiarly in its fourth attempt in a row on first contact, this time with said general. Chinese victory ensued.
Third Fourth play off against another member of the Herefordshire team, Stephen. I deployed scenery to attempt the same board split as had occurred against the late Romans. This time the wood was the Southern Dynasty Chinese problem with an edifice splitting the board centrally. Horrendous early PIPs for the Chinese seemed to have little effect, whereas the same for the Galatians later on proved fatal. Not only could Cavalry not back away from advancing double bow and warwagon combo, but warband could not capitalise against blades in the wood. Ultimately a crushing defeat for the Galatians. A good job as Stephen was our driver for the day!
A successful group in the morning. Utterly undone by two Chinese armies in the afternoon. I guess it was the Chinese New Year!
Thank you to Alan and Crusade for an excellent event, and for all for such a well fought and enjoyable competition.
As for the car, we took third and fourth in the main event and third in the plate: all pretty happy on the way home!

Big thanks to Alan, As ususal the organisation was smooth and excellent. Plenty of time to complete games too.
We (one figure pusher and one dicer) brought a chinese army for the lunar new year: Spring and Autumn, version c, with a chinese barbarian Ally. The doctrine was to have a low Agg, Arable, fast army to carpet the board with rough going. The ally was mostly for the LCh, for edge of the table game, and the 2 Wb(F) for difficult going work if required. The army felt a bit awkward due to the ally, but performed well enough, 5 Bd(F) + 2 Bw(F) is a tough combo in general. It was also helped by very good combat dice, and very poor dice for our opponents mostly. Pips were poor in the semi and finals however. I must have been surprised to face a quasi monotype early viking army in the final as I made very dumb mistakes: completely ignored that the viking can littoral land and obligingly placed a WW (doh!), and assumed that they were solid blades, and merrily placed our large rough going pieces (double doh!!). Martin must have been wondering which psychoactive I had been smoking when he deployed his 10 Bd(F) in ideal terrain. Anyway we still had a lot of combat luck and even managed to despatch a Bd in CC with a Bw. It was starting to look like we might get a grossly undeserved victory when the chinese CinC, Ross-the-boss, died on a 6-6 fighting a Bd while overlaped. Rolled a 6, but lost the game, that felt strangely appropriate.
So what was learned? *Lucks helps a lot, but won't always compensate for gross incompetence (already knew that of course). *Fast Bd are just too much, too flexible, too reactive, too strong really. When choosing armies, I will now have to include monotype fast blades armies in my list of "standard opponents" that we should have some sort of answer to. (I also had a very hard games vs the Polynesian of Pete D. at Bakewell last year). *Fast Bw are also very very good. *But where are the big knight armies, the big El armies? The metagame seems a bit odd in the UK at the moment, lots of shooty armies, and fast Bd armies, Camel stuff too. *S&A chinese are really neat, but would probably work better sans ally. Better paint these chariots soon then. *Still can't think of any army better than the Tamil pachyderm doomstack, and am very surprised to not having had to fight one yet.
