Two games of ‘Double DBA’, with 24 elements per side today, vs my gaming oppo Colin the Hittite.
My Marian Romans with a Numidian ally invaded Carthaginian territory. The Med formed my left flank, and the Romans held the coastal strip. Inland, some steep hills were patrolled by the Numidian ally, who contested the high ground with the enemy’s Spanish ally. The inland clash was a stalemate/holding action, while the main fighting on the plain saw a Gallic landing repelled, followed by a grinding engagement between legionaries and Carthaginians which slowly went the Romans way. Win to Rome.
Game two saw my Achaemenid army attack Saitic Egypt, where the residents called upon a Libyan ally for assistance. Two areas of ploughland were redesignated as ‘rough going’ after the initial movement dice were rolled (boggy plough, or maybe entangling crops, perhaps). That proved problematic for the Persian cavalry and Bactrian light horse, who were hoping for some swift equine action, but also initially slowed the enemy spearmen, possibly delaying the inevitable for Xerxes and co.. The Persian main body, led by scythed chariots and levy hordes stalled against Egyptian and Greek mercenary foot who used the boggy ploughland to protect their flanks, while at the same time my smaller but more mobile right wing command, crippled by indecision (ie low PIP rolls), crumbled under pressure from the Libyan ally. Only a single enemy spears element fell, while on the Persian side there were twelve losses plus both scythed chariots and both elements of levy (horde) foot. A pitiful display by the Achaemenids, but great fun, nonetheless.
(Followed by a 12 element per side ACW game, using a DBA HX rules variant, tweaked for v3. Enjoyable, quick and a bit of a change....)
