I'm planning a 28mm BBDBA on Friday. Can anyone recommend any house rules they know of that add a bit of extra historical accuracy with v3 to the early 16th century?
Thanks

I’m afraid I’m unable to offer anything concrete for you Simon, as I really don’t know the period beyond 1500 AD well enough. House rules are a pretty subjective subject. What one person likes another may dislike. All I can do is offer my own personal favourites (some of which may not be suitable for BBDBA or the late Medieval/Renaissance period). Certainly everything in the “Lessons from History” booklet, and “LH only pays ½ a PIP to move”. To that I’d add “Randomly Generated Terrain” (which can be found here:- fanaticus-dba.fandom.com/wiki/File:Randomly_Generated_Terrain_Chart.pdf ) Other than that all I can suggest is browsing through the “House Rule Index” (here:- fanaticus.boards.net/thread/1146/house-rule-index ) ...and see what takes your fancy. Interestingly, the DBR 2.0 rule-set already contains its own rules for temporary field defences, a points system, weather, an internal time of day, ambushes, superior-inferior grading factors, and much more. So these particular rules, unlike DBA 3.0, probably needs few if any extra house rules. Some Helpful Downloads can be found here: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Reference_sheets_and_epitomes And here is the latest Jan 2019 FAQ: fanaticus-dba.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ_2019_1st_Quarter

Arquebusiers, 4 vs. foot, 2 vs. mounted is DBR.
Older supplement from Miniature Wargames suggested 3 vs. foot and 3 vs. mounted.
Problem is that at Pavia the arquebusiers shot down the French knights, which sort of speaks for higher factor than 2 shooting against mounted. And, at a factor of 4 against pike arquebusiers are too good against the pike in close combat.
I would allow the arqebusiers to shoot only 1 bw. (so no ganging up against pike. This was a real problem in DBR; start at a 4, get two supporting elements, and now you are shooting at 4-1 vs. the poor pike who'cost' just as much in 12 element a side games.)
Which brings up another problem, which is doctrine. The arquebusiers in the early 16th century were not yet fully integrated as 'wings' into formation with the pike. They functioned rather more like skirmishers (see Monluc). But, their fire was now sufficiently annoying that the side losing the skirmish would find itself forced to engage. Bodies of arquebusiers might still fight from near the pike at the corners (pictures of Swiss arquebusiers from contemporary sources).
So, maybe make the shot 3-2; but combat results like skirmishers and movement like aux through bad going.
I helped enough with DBR to make the 'back of the book'. Sad, a lot of my source information will probably disappear from the record when Yahoogroups goes down.

There’s the humberside extensions that add gunpowder to DBA, and I suspect with only a bit of modification would work well with 3.0 if they haven’t been updated already. Definitely get it on yahoo before the end of days..

Thanks for the ideas and leads. I do think that at this time, Arquebusiers may be best represented as Ps. At Pavia, the French Gendarmes ended up fighting them in woods so perhaps having a rule along the lines of having the Gendarmes charge anything to their front, even in bad going or pursuing into bad going might add a bit of flavour!

Way late, but it is the one year anniversary, so a good excuse for a refight.
Bidding for the services of the Swiss (both sides have to secretly bid for them, and then see how many units/points they need to give up for that from their force).
You can either have them switch sides, or just stay out of the fight. Work that out with all participants, before opening the bidding, since most will probably be willing to pay more for them, if they come over to their side AND fight.
The side losing the Swiss has to replace them with less experienced and capable troops of their choice.

I'm no expert on the period but I would plump for a boost to any handgunners or such.
One reason why gunpowder firearms became popular is that although slow firing they were lethal if they hit and compared to non-firearm weapons could ignore most armour in the Italian Wars period.
So if you are representing them with Ps perhaps consider Qking some heavier troops (eg Pk) on a DRAW.
