I love Baueda’s Marian romans and I own Corvus Belli’s Later Carthaginians. I’ve not see Polybians that I like much to face them.
Is it damning to use Marians for the 4Bd elements of a “Polybian” army? I just don’t dig the feathers.. would still have to get some Triarii but still.... will I be sent to Wargamers hell/purgatory for such an offense?

Heresy!!!
The Shades of Scipio, Fabius, and their peers are gesturing 'Thumbs Down!!!'
Next thing you know, you'll have painted Hannibal as a Sub-Saharan and given him two swords...
Temporary substitutions while obtaining the proper figures or painting and basing them is one thing, flagrant anachronistic replacement is quite another.

Confession time! I once substituted some Parthian Cataphracts as Knights for a Hundred Years War French army.
I was not struck down by a thunder bolt! Mind you I did have seven years bad luck, the fleas of a thousand camels infested my armpits and my face broke out in black warts.Probably no connection, but it makes you wonder!

To be honest, I’m scared of the size. Everywhere I look I hear that Xyston Polybians are huge. My Corvus Belli are no tiny figs either I’m a bit worried they will look strange vs each other. The other problem is that those two Roman armies (Polybian and Marian) are very similar to each other. So to paint both of them seems like a bit of a waste since it takes me forever to paint. That said, those Xystons look great so maybe it’s time for the feathers to come out. Do you have any pics? Chris

I like the Fantassin/Warmodelling/Capitan and now, Stonewall Figures, Punic War miniatures. But seen some queries about service so I haven't made the plunge yet.
Cheers

Chris Way I see it is that as the (not yet invented) clock struck midnight at the end of 106BC the soldiers didn’t throw out all their old kit and form a line to collect the ‘all-new, trendy Marian look’ equipment...😊 Go with whatever tickles yer banana

Personally I'm fine with heresies of this type, although I think that, like other perversions, anachronistic substitutions should be kept in private and amongst consenting adults.

I confess that I’m a lazy bugger when it comes to painting figures (or anything else for that matter). So I always try to have figures that would fit in more than one army. My 4Wb for example are a mix of Gauls and Germans, so they can become ‘generic’ barbarians. As for the Polybian-Marian situation, here is my solution:- Polybians: 2 x Cv (one in red Roman uniforms, one in white Latin allied uniforms) 2 x Triarii Sp (with helmet plumes, in red ‘Roman’ uniforms) 2 x Legionary 4Bd (with helmet plumes and red uniforms, representing the Roman legions) 2 x Legionary 4Bd (no plumes and white uniforms, representing Latin allied legions) 2 x Legionary 4Bd (no plumes and white uniforms, representing Latin allied legions) or 3/4Ax (Italian allies) 2 x Velite Ps (in white uniforms) Marians: use the 4 x 4Bd above without plumes in white uniforms, and add more 4Bd without tall plumes. In other words, I have 4 x 4Bd ‘Caesarian’ plumeless elements that I use for both the Polybian and Marian armies. At a pinch I can even get a II/10 Camillan army out of this:- Camillans: 2 x Cv (one in red Roman uniforms, one in white Latin allied uniforms) 2 x Triarii Sp (with helmet plumes, in red ‘Roman’ uniforms) 2 x Legionary 4Bd (with helmet plumes and red uniforms, representing the Hastati) 2 x Legionary 4figs (no plumes and white uniforms, representing allied Latin Principes Spearmen) 2 x 3/4Ax (Italian allies) 2 x Velite/Levy Ps (in white uniforms) ------------------------------- By the way, I’ve also found a neat solution to the thorny question of 3 or 4 figure bases. Paint two armies of 3Wb & 4Wb?...or two armies of 3Ax & 4Ax?...not me thanks. I have a thin piece of card beneath my bases with a single figure at each end and a 20mm gap in the middle. Want 4 figures per base?....then plop a 20mm wide 2 figure ½ base in the gap. Want 3 figures per base?....then plop a 20mm wide 1 figure ½ base in the gap. Want 2 figures per base?....then plop a blank 20mm spacer in the gap. ...all held in place with double-sided sticky tape (or you could use magnetic bases). Why have three Thracian armies (Ps, 3Ax, and 4Ax) when one can do the job. It saves time painting, and saves money, so I can spend more of both down the pub. I would suggest the Outpost line of Republican Romans (Polybians) myself. Only quibble is that their Velites are significantly taller than rest of line.

In all my years wargaming I have never had anyone question the authenticity of my figures and no I don't always have the exact historical figure.
My brother, who has an even more liberal approach to using 'accurate' figures (Eygptian spears as Lydian Hopolites??), has only been pulled up once in a DBA game and that was by someone who pointed out that the spotty dog in his camp was inaccurate, because Dalamation dogs as a breed didn't exist at that point in history!

I would def not condone such dishonourable behaviour. Never have my Wolf Riders played the role of Normans, T34's masqueraded as Crusaders or myself played the role of a tactical genius. Oh no wait, they have done so in spades.
I like to go with Generic Medieval rather than Swiss etc and Greek Pikes get to play many roles.
I don't really know enough about the Romans to notice the difference, though to be fair only Romans with square sheilds are true Romans to my eyes. The main book of ref being Asterix in Britain
