*** Date now confirmed - 14 December 2019 ***
Matt has come up with a theme for the 2019 PAWS Winter DBA. It is...
Later Crusades in the Eastern Mediterranean 1201-1300 III/74a,b, Seljuq Turk IV/1b, Komnenan Byzantine IV/2 Cilician Armenian IV/6a,b, Syrian IV/17 Later Crusader IV/20 Ayyubid Egyptian IV/24b, Khwarizmian refugee army IV/26 Lusignan Cypriot IV/31 Nikaian Byzantine IV/32 Romanian Frank IV/35 Mongol Conquest IV/45 Mamluk Egyptian IV/46 Ilkhanid IV/49 Anatolian Turkmen IV/50 Palaiologan Byzantine IV/51a, Morean Byzantine IV/55a, Ottoman IV/56 Order of St John
Allies only permitted if from the above list and dates.
The only thing to be decided now is the date, as Pompey will be playing (creating heavy traffic in the area) on our original proposed date of 7 December. The options are now 30 November or 14 December. If you are intending to come, please indicate which date(s) you could make it in the poll.

Correct me if I am wrong but shouldn't the IV/4a Kommenans be the b list?

Bill Has the date been firmed up yet?
( Doing the usual “looking ahead to see what my roster will bring“ for December .... could do with knowing if the 14th of December is in the current plan or not. I now know 30th November is a day off, so could def do that.)

I now know 30th November is a day off, so could def do that.) The poll will remain open until Saturday and we will decide on Sunday at the Open. The November date is leading teh poll but I've had a couple of extra votes for December from non-Fanaticus users, so the decision could go either way.
If we do decide on 14th December, we will probably have an informal DBA session on 30th November anyway, where most likely people will practice or try out possible armies for the tournament (but some just try out the theme at the informal DBA sessions if they can't make the actual tournament).

Including votes notified to me off Fanaticus, the preferences for 30 November or 14 December were even.
We have decided to go for 14th December for the tournament, but we will be holding an informal DBA afternoon at the same venue on 30 November.

Matt has pointed out an omission from the theme.
IV/24b, Khwarizmian refugee army has now been added as this army captured Jerusalem in the 13th Century.

Tried out three games / six different armies from the theme today.
Later Crusaders defended against ‘b’ list Seljuk Turks, but the crusader foot sergeants were steamrollered by an unusually effective cavalry charge. Additionally the Turkish archers shot down knights and turcopoles for a 1-4 win.
Next, Komnenan Byzantines defended near a city on a flat coastal plain against a Syrian (Iraqi Abbasid) invasion. After initially inconclusive skirmishes in the centre, the Komnenan general led his troops in a charge on the opposing ghazi foot, who fell rapidly beneath the onslaught, for a 4-2 Byzantine victory.
Last up, Lusignan Cypriots invaded Mamluk Egypt. Egyptian artillery played havoc with the enemy infantry, shooting in the adjacent Mamluk cavalrymen. The formidable wall of Cypriot crossbowmen were attacked at speed, and were unable to halt the opposing ghulam cavalry. Cypriot spearmen also fell, as did quite a few crossbowmen, and despite a partially successful counter, which felled a few ghulams, the Lusignans were sent packing, on a 2-4 loss.
Fun, and a few unexpected outcomes
