I am finishing up my pre-order through Magister Militum for the SELWG Open.
Boy, do I ever enjoy going through all the figs and deciding which ones to use for the various troop types of the armies I want to get (of course I haven't paid for them yet, which might dampen my enthusiasm at time of paying
Still, picking and choosing figs is so much more fun than just selecting an army pack.

I placed an order for Old Glory to fill two armies; the Strathclyde and Feudal Spanish for the Kingdom of Galicia (750 AD). Strathclyde troops have a similar appearance to the 9th/10th century Saxons, but these will mostly be bareheaded to appear different from the Middle Anglo-Saxons already in the collection.
I am also pleased that all the packs ordered will be used for the two armies; no wastage or excess figures.

Not saying it was a given for you since you are getting figs to complete two armies, but I can now see one of the pros for going with an army pack... no leftover figs.
Maybe I can use some of the extras in making hordes.

I have thought about purchasing army packs, but I like the variety of poses offered in certain Old Glory packs. The metal used is somewhat pliable which makes converting figures less a problem.
I avoid ordering command packs as I can easily take a standard trooper and with a bit of Milliput can add plumage to a helm, a cloak or fur lined cape. A lance can easily be changed to a sword to complete a general’s appearance.

...i started using characters from different manufacturers for a selected army. For example, dark age warriors can fight with or without a helmet or even a fur hat...

I think this should be one of my next things to look into... how to do conversions of figures.

And a word of caution... check the prices of things before buying! As part of my pre-order I want to purchase 4 figs of ENK4 Egyptian Bowmen, and noticed something odd about the price in that they were way more expensive than other 4 infantry figure types which come in around £2.10 The site has 4 figures of ENK4 listed at £3.54 yet has 8 figures of ENK4 listed at £3.33! So I sent them an email hoping that they can update their site with the correct price. I get the feeling that at the moment, ENK4 at the 4 figure option, is not a hot seller
