Well the first battle of my 1066 campaign has been played. I ignored Fullford for this campaign. Started with Stamford Bridge.
A very hard fought battle. Harold formed his shield wall with his Huscarl's (Blade) and Select Fryd in the centre with two ploughed fields to his front. His Great Fryd (Horde) he placed on a hill on his right flank.
The Vikings formed up in the centre with Hardarda in reserve behind. Tostig formed up in the shield wall.
After initial success the with Harold hacking his way deep into the Viking shield wall the Vikings hit back, Leowfine, Harolds brother fell and the hill on the right was taken by the Vikings after a hard struggle.
Then deprived of their flank support after Harold plunged into the Viking lines two elements of Select Fryd fell so giving Hardarda and Tostig their victory.
Harold escaped capture by the skin of his teeth. He has now withdrawn to lick his wounds and set about forming another army.
Hardarda and Tostig are heading south. They have just heard the kingdom is not theirs for the taking. William the Bastard has landed on the south coast and they march to meet him.
To be continued.
