Does anyone know what colour was the back of the shields used by Greek Hoplites ? Were they painted? I assume they were painted, I painted mine red so far. Cheers, Paul.

I tend to use either wood or leather colour for the backs of shields. The last time I did Greek hoplites I think that I used wood. The exception is Etruscan hoplites, where I paint the backs of the shields light blue. Apparently, Etruscan art frequently depicts the backs of their hoplite shields as blue.

A shade of brown for leather or wood on my hoplons as well.
To date only my Romans get red, although in a previous discussion it was noted that the Han also painted the backs of their shields red.
