My favourite material is used for all my terrain pieces – this is a standard floor covering and cut to size for hills, roads, rivers, waterways, etc. The material is painted and sparingly flocked as different scatter material can make them rocky ground, swamps, enclosures, or woods.
In the link, you can see the buildings and palm trees are based separately so they may be removed to allow the placement of troops. dbagora.blogspot.com/2018/01/historical-match-up-old-kingdom.html

I use metal bases with brown scatter, small stones/cork & static grass.
I first got into these with the smaller 10mm & 6mm figures in other periods because they gave a good weight to the stands but they're great for my 15mm DBA too.
I store all my armies in wooden insert trays on magnetic sheets & can fit 2 x 15mm trays (3 or 4 with the smaller scales) in my Really Useful Boxes which makes storage & transport a dream.
Regards,
j

My BUAs are all Hamlets, so I use heavy cardboard bases, on which I put buildings that can be taken away when elements move through them (the same approach I use with other terrain pieces).

I tend to use felt of an appropriate colour with age and geographic appropriate buildings placed on top, (if I have them, or nearest thing if not).

3mm pre-cut MDF bases sand and PVA glue and some scatter on top. Like the others I don't fix the buildings down. They are removable to aid game play.

I use mdf basing for forts and cities (usually), as they’re ‘fixed’ BUAs, with no need to move the houses/features around. For hamlets, usually felt, with scattered terrain items on, permitting them to be moved out of the way of passing troops. Similar with edifices, though some of mine are large, and need a felt ‘shadow’ base so the edifice can be removed to allow troops in.

I don't use a base. My table is marked out very subtly with a 6" grid which I use for my English Civil War battles using the "For King and Parliament" rules which requires a table mark in a grid.
I position my BUA within the box so I can have everything from a hamlet to a city.
Other terrain pieces such as woods are on a card base as I like those to be irregular in shape.
