Seven games vs Colin the Hittite at Smiff Mansions today
1) His Avars invaded north Italy, where the Italian Lombards defended either side of a ruined temple complex (edifice). Combats went the Lombards way, as the more mobile Avars had little manoeuvre room (4-1 to the Langobards)
2) a further invasion by the Magyars, with a similarly placed temple. The Lombard Kn were drawn ever onwards into the massed Magyar LH ranks until they were swamped by the horse archers, losing 0-4 as the price of their overzealous pursuit.
3) my Polybian Romans invaded Celtiberian territory, and found themselves totally outmatched in the hilly, wooded terrain. An attempted left hook round the hills by the Roman general and cavalry escorts came to naught. Elsewhere the Hastati and Principes were stifled by difficult hills, and the Spanish scored a resounding victory, 4-0. (Romani ite domum, etc ).
4) my Sassanid Persians unwisely invaded Nubia, to be met by their Christian army in scrubby and sand-dune infested terrain. The Sassanian horde foot and elephant support were cramped in by poor terrain, but pushed on regardless (cos that's how I roll ), and very nearly pinned the Christian Nubian commander against a bank of dunes. However, all turned against us as the enemy bowmen, clinging to the edge of bad terrain for safety, peppered the Asaravan cavalry with arrows. (Sassanid loss, 2-4+2 x Hd).
5) My Maurikian Byzantines marched into the desert to assault Colin's Nobades. The Byzantine missile troops (archers and artillery) fought well on the right flank, while on the left the Romano-Greek Kavallarioi and Skutatoi had the best of the clash with the Sudanese, the game going to a 5-2 Byzantine win.
6) My early Arab Conquest force, mostly swordsmen, with a few supporting cavalry and cameleers, fought off a Khazar invasion, near to an Arab-held desert fort. The asiatic horde had no troops with bad terrain capability, so the Muslim archers dominated the centre of the battlefield from a patch of rough, scrubby ground. Meanwhile the Arab swordsmen stuck to their traditional 'attack at all costs' approach, and closed on the enemy horse. Dross Khazar foot were shot down, and the footslogging holy warriors had stunning success against their opponents, to go 4+Hd to 2 up.
7) Finally, the Celtiberians crossed the Pyrenees into the cultivated plains of southern Gaul. The battle took place near a village/hamlet and over the ploughed fields of the Gallic host, but the ploughland had little effect on the fighting, as it remained a dry day, and firm under foot. The two battle lines rapidly closed, with the Celtiberian swordsmen and Celtic foot warriors going at it head to head, the fighting swaying back and forth all along the line. After reaching 2-2 the Spanish had the best of the next bound, and won a supremely tightly fought game by 4-2. Tenterhooks, start to finish.
Seven excellent games of DBA, all in about a five hour period.
