Depending upon the paints you might want to add the metallic paints last. Most will probably be OK, but I did have problems years ago with oil based model paints painting stars etc. on shields of 20mm Lamming figures.
Unless I happen to have a color that I want to do more of (production line - get as many figures with the current color as practicable) in a current session and so pull in figures out of 'sequence,' I am with cromwell in this (although a Royalist otherwise).
Start with the flesh and then garments followed by armor (if present) and then the fiddly bits...
I tend to paint cloths and stuff first - including chainmail etc if the models have them, and then dark wash those (and even touch up/highlight) if needed. Then I'll do lighter flesh and then wash.highlight those,
