I'm leaving this campaign here for now. I'm struggling to get much traction with Saxons against the Vikings. I'll be posting in the strategy section to try and get some advice. But I think I'll continue with the campaigns. Either Carthage v Greeks (Syracuse or Kyrene) or Gauls v Thracians. I'll keep you informed.
Cheers
Jim

That was a great read. Hope you post about your future campaigns, too.

Thrilling saga there, Jim. I think if you were campaigning the first Danish raids into the Littori Saxoni, these outcomes are pretty historical?
Now if you want the army of Alfred the Great (the only British Monarch so described) you'll need to house-rule something. My claim is that by that time, the Danes are no longer 3Bd, but have become more of a shieldwall themselves (having now turned to settlement, trade and farming, and no longer being fulltime seafaring "special forces" raiders).
I'd model the Danes as Sp instead. Then Alfred is in with a fighting chance.

Of course they are 4Bd despite spears being the most common weapon and clear evidence of Shieldwall tactics. But then again, if I want Sp v Sp, I can go back to Classical Greece. Cheers Jim

I haave followed this topic some and would like to add some thoughts to your campaign.
You could view the Viking armies as a collection of independent Viking Jarls and make use of the ‘allied contingent’ option. Two allied Jarls comprising two elements each could reflect a level of rivalry if pip scores are low.
The contingents could be away conducting their own raids to be bothered with a general call up, so you could cast a die to determine which join the main army or not.
