Hi All
A chum/hated enemy has the Normans
I am looking for a Dark Age force to face them.
Don't fancy Anglo Dane as I have plenty of sturdy foot slogging armies already. Anyone suggest something interesting that could give them a decent scrap.

You could look at some of the enemies they had in Italy/Mediterranean eg Lombards Papal/Communal Italian, Byzantines, Fatimid, Early Muslim Nortn Africa?

I don’t own a Norman army but was looking at exactly that question this morning and planning 3 armies. Norman, Anglo-Danish and III/40b Viking’s. 11 x 4 Bd and a Ps must be good for a scrap.
I then looked at manufacturers and who I would go with. Ideally a single manufacturer for all 3 armies. I couldn’t decide......too much choice.
Any recommendations? I decided I’d probably have to defer until the Forged in Battle ranges were released as looking at the Kickstarter pictures they would definitely be contenders.

Just painting a Baueda Viking army up currently and they’re very nice figures and their packaging is a touch more DBA friendly than FiB. Khurasan are excellent, but be prepared for a big hit, postage and customs wise, if you live outside the US😱 P

If you're looking for a viable opponent you all the Knights, I'd suggest going for the Nikephorian Byzantine list. It has a nice mix of Bw and mounted.

Another contender from the USA, Splintered Light, do this period very nicely.
The other approach is to look at the Welsh armies... and maybe the Anglo-Normans.

Normans Early French Feudal Welsh Anglo Norman Pre-Feudal Scots Vikings And now Norse Irish... Makes for a great campaign. Can't help with figs though. Mine are all 25mm. Joe Collins

Joe Collins I too have the Normans and prefer the Southern Normans even though I can field both. I do agree with Joe on the choice if your thinking of doing the Normandy version of the army but would choose Western Frank rather than the Feudal French. The Southern Normans could face: Italian Lombards (b list). Early Muslim North Africa and Scicilians. Eastern Frank (Holy Roman Emperor).! Nikephorian Byzantine. Communal Italian (a list). Konstantinian Byzantine. Or Papal Italian. Now that would be a good campaign.

Indeed it would be - I am 5 armies off making up a 13 player set for this period III/52 Normans - Done (I have had these boys for decades) III/21b Italian Lombard III/76 Konstantinian Byzantine - Done - finished last year and used at Cancon to great effect III/33 Early Muslim North Africa & Sicily III/77 Papal Italian - Done finished only a couple of weeks ago III/73a Communal Italian - underway 3 elements finished III/66 Fatimid Egyptian - done I have had these for years and made the full DBA3 conversion last month III/76 Islamic Berber - one of my earliest DBA armies - rebased and converted to DBA3 last month III/53 East Frankish III/12 Christian Nubian - Done another old favourite, recently (last year) brought up to DBA3 code III/21b Serbian - 4 elements made up from painted figures purchased last year II/55c Beja III/26a Croatian - Done the foot were painted figures purchased from Hinds Miniatures, and the Cv were painted in Feb this year
This will be a cool Kn and Sp campaign with several CP thrown in for fun
I made the push to get this set done so that one of my players could use his Papal Italian, but said friend has been posted to Queensland. Before he left he did his conversion magic on a Xyston Antigonos to make the Pope on a Litter for my Papal army.
As for figures - I have a mix of just about everything for the various Norman looking knights in these armies. My Papal Italian are primarily Two Dragons and they look exquisite - I am not sure if they are still available but if so I would recommend them.
My armies have Essex, Baudea, Tin Soldier, Two Dragons and who knows what else in the mix
Cheers

I'm with diades on this topic. I finished Splintered Light Anglo-Saxons/Anglo-Danes and Vikings. Very happy. Little Big Men shield transfers were also fantastic. I will try and get a picture up if limits will let me. You can do Normans but you can't do Welsh. I have an Essex Welsh army on its way. Cheers Jim

Baldie,
Off the top of my head what about Bretons (III/18)? Heaps of mounted, could be all mounted, so a long way from a heavy foot army.

Well we just played Lart Normans vs my Ancient Brits. Needless to say the popo riders did nasty things to my little chaps.
