ALTON MATCHED PAIRS 2017
Early 'heads up' - the planned date for the next Alton Matched Pairs, at Alton, Hants., UK is
Saturday 25th February 2017.
Format is highly likely to be the same as in previous runnings of this event:-
ie
ALTON DBA Matched Pairs, 2017 (a Society of Ancients UK DBA League event)
Saturday 25th February 2017, 10:00-17:00.
Register from 0930 for a prompt start before 10:15, please.
Venue : ALL SAINTS CHURCH HALL , 4, QUEENS ROAD , ALTON , HANTS , GU34 1HU. (Location - Behind Alton Registry Office, opposite BP petrol station, behind All Saints Church, approx 15 mins walk from Alton railway station).
Format = “Matched Pairs” Each player brings a matched pair of DBA armies from the DBA v3 lists, preferably historical adversaries. On alternating rounds the player will be using his own or his opponent’s pair. The player who is using his opponent’s pair of armies chooses which of the pair to play with. With 6 rounds planned, this will mean 3 games will be with your own pair, 3 with various opponents’ pairs. Match-ups will be random, not swiss Chess or knockout. All players should get 6 games, and organiser will try to avoid match-ups between fellow club members etc., if requested. 2ft boards will be supplied. Please bring own terrain, camp, rules etc. and spare boards if possible. Rules for use of larger boards will be finalised nearer the date.
Note:- The organiser will endeavour to supply spare armies or pairs for those unable to bring a pair (Please give notice as far in advance as possible and I’ll do what I can).
Cost will be £5 per player, £3 for 16years and under.
Assortment of PRIZES will be on offer (to be announced/painted).
To register interest or request loan armies, please contact Martin Smith on
07981 221687 or 01420 84734
or PM me via this website.

A question or two were asked by a prospective player:-
Q. - What about allies which are not in the rule book, but there is reasonable evidence for? A. - Allies not in the book but 'justifiable' is FINE BY ME. After all, any matchup anomalies will be for the opponent to choose between (eg One player used a historically plausible but "not in the book" clash in the first ever Alton pairs).
Q.- What rules on board size? A. We will be doing the same as last year:- Default is 2ft. If both want big board (and one is available), go ahead. If player whose pair of armies is in use (the 'owner') wants the big board, but the 'visitor' does not, then the visitor vetoes, and you revert to 2ft. If the 'visitor' wants the large board, but the armies' owner does not, then dice. 'Visitor' must beat the 'Owner' to secure use of larger board. Draw = standard board

Another Q asked - "if a list has elements which are eg 3Kn//4Bd can I bring just one of these, and not provide the dismount option?". My response - prefer if we provide both in a // situation, so the non-owner has the choice.
Rules definitions Will be pretty much as last year, ie :-
DBA v3 Rules Clarifications for ALTON DBA Matched Pairs 25/02/2017.
BOARD SIZE-
• Will be 2ft x 2ft, unless agreed by players (see separate sheet). (as defined previously in the thread)
CORNER TO CORNER CONTACT –
• Is NOT considered front contact, so no free slide to align.
FORTS – can be entered / exited
• Only by gate, unless assaulting.
RECOILING THROUGH A CITY/FORT GATE –
• Not permitted
CAMPS, if placed on Waterways – may be placed
• Only within players permitted max. forward deployment area i.e. not within 3BW of centre line.
EDIFICE as CAMP –
• May be nominated as camp only if on own baseline or a waterway edge within permitted deployment zone (ie not within 3 BW of centerline), and must be maximum camp sized or smaller to be so used.
• No camp may be laid as an additional edifice after the initial terrain choosing and placing process. However, a camp model with edifice-like features may be placed, but it then functions purely as a camp (not a BUA).
*****CAMP PLACEMENT***** new rule Camps may not be placed in the outer 2 basewidths of the players deployment edge
CAMPS, if CAPTURED, are then –
• Left in place (or replaced by a same-sized template), and count as good going, unless edifice. The sacking element advances 1 base depth into the camp from the perimeter, and measures any future movement from that position.
SHOOTING
• Definition of ‘blocked by at least ½ BW of certain terrain’ -
Shooting is only allowed if uncrossed straight lines drawn from shooter’s front corners to target edge/ 1/2 BW section of edge do not at any stage pass through more than 20mm of blocking terrain.
• Mounted Infantry may not move more than 1BW and still shoot in any bound.
• Lb and Cb do NOT destroy enemy Kn on ties in distance combat.
DEEP WATERWAY BEHIND INVADER, PREVENTING DEPLOYMENT
• Invader is given the choice of the other two legally permitted edges, then restart from camp placement stage.
RIVERS
• Tactical movement in a river must be directly forwards or backwards, except that an element may divert by the minimum necessary to line up in close combat with an enemy element.
• Elements may recoil into or out of a river. A fleeing element which enters a river is destroyed.
• Flank or rear support IS permitted whilst in rivers, unless any part of the elements in question are in rough or bad going.
• Deployment in a river is NOT permitted.
ELEPHANTS
• Elephants that receive a recoil result with enemy in front edge contact to both their front and to their flank or rear are destroyed instead of recoiling. They do not destroy elements behind them.
• Elephants recoiling (but not “flanked” or “reared”) destroy all elements in their recoil path, except elements in Forts, Cities and Camps. Elephants may recoil as normal into Edifice or Hamlet BUAs. Elephants that recoil into Elephants which are in a Hamlet or Edifice destroy them (and are destroyed) as above. Other elements in Hamlet or Edifice are not destroyed. They are pushed back or block recoil per standard recoil rules.
• Elephants that meet Elephants during recoil do not finish their recoil, and also destroy the Elephants met.
• If Elephants start their recoil with their rear in contact with a City, Fort, or camp they are destroyed. However, If El with space to start their recoil contact a City, Fort, or Camp during a recoil move they end their movement.
• Elephants destroy elements “met”. Elephant has to actually enter the area occupied by another to destroy it. ie if a 40mm gap exists, there is no destroyed result. Touching does not count as ‘meeting’ in this case.

Forgot to add - if you get a chance, please write out a sheet with both your armies, their aggression rating and their home terrain type, which can be presented to the opponent to choose from. I have blank forms for this, but it speeds up the registration/set up process if players arrive with the armies written out in advance. Many thanks.

Martin, in the FAQ post. Elephants section. Second bullet point, second line. To what does "other elements are not destroyed" refer? Scott

Ahah, Other elements in a BUA are not destroyed by recoiling elephants. Got it. Scott That's it....had to re-read it myself, as I wrote it over a year ago. Basically being in a hamlet/edifice reduces the impact on the BUA occupant of being trampled (rightly or wrongly). I'll add an edit. Martin and apologies for the delayed reply, Scott.....work n stuff.....
