Battle of Magnesia 190 BC The Battle of Magnesia (190 BC) has been on my to do list since the Consular Army project of nearly three years ago.
This battle holds a particular fascination as it will bring two unequal size forces to the table.
In preparation I had done a number of test games to refresh my experience using pike against blade and the diverse troop types of the Seleucid army. At the blog are some key items learned in the series of tests. dbagora.blogspot.com/2019/01/rome-versus-seleucid-preparation-for.html

Seleucid versus Parthia – preping for Magnesia 190 BC The combined Roman-Pergamene cavalry strength at Magnesia was estimated at 3,000 strong and though outnumbered by Seleucid totals I thought it a good refresher to field the Seleucid against a mobile opponent, the Parthians.
The battle was fought on the larger board with both commands increased to 18 elements.

When you expand to 18 units, do you use an ally, divide into 2 commands with separate PIP dice, or just roll 2 dice for one big command? Jeff, In the case with the Carpi vs. Rome, the Carpi did field a Sarmatian ally as part of their initial 12 element command. Six more Carpi brought the total to 18 elements with the entire command making use of one die.
The proposed Battle of Magnesia would have two Roman and one Pergamene ally face four Seleucid commands bringing and estimated 40 elements vs. 70 to the game board.

Interesting action between the Parthians and Seleucids. I have been planning on springing the 3BW option for the Parthians on opponents in a tourney down the road. A lot of KN heavy armies show up and a mix of KN and fast BW worked well for me with Palmyrans against Scyths in a previous outing.
Not that it appears to have had much of an impact in your battles, however. Against foot not nearly as much impact.
Looking forward to the next reports.

The archers (3Bw) did work well supporting the nobles (4Kn), however, they were not used in a subsequent series against the Sassanid Persians of Ardashir I (III/69a). The Persians fielded an all mounted mix of 3Kn, Cv and LH.
Not reported in the battle, the archers did take out an element of pike which vindicated their usefulness.

A very deep sigh. All the Classical Indians are painted and now ready for varnishing. Next step is texturing the bases for 28 elements and hopefully by the weekend I should have photos posted to the blog. I am very impressed with the revision of the Old Glory figures as these have more detail than their previous models. A new order was placed a few weeks ago and this will increase the army for BBDBA and does include extras for the Republican and Mountain Indian variants.

New opponents for the Seleucid – Classical Indians II/3a,b Photos of the Classical Indians are posted to the blog.
I am waiting for the delivery of a final order which will bring their strength to three commands. The 28 elements that are done will have plenty of practice before then. dbagora.blogspot.com/2019/02/the-classical-indian-ii3ab.html

Beyond the Fifth Cataract (Ptolemaic vs. Meroitic Kushites). This historical match up is a continuation of pike army exercises in preparation for the Battle of Magnesia. A Ptolemaic army has invaded the Kingdom of Kush with surprising results.

Graeco-Bactrian vs. Mauryan Indian The series of test games with pike armies features the Bactrians against the Mauryan Indian.
Historically, this is set around the campaigns of Demerius in the Indus valley (ca. 187 BC). Follow the link to read the battle reports with photos. dbagora.blogspot.com/2019/03/graeco-bactrian-vs-mauryan-indian.html

Mauryan Indian vs. Graeco-Bactrian (the cavalry option) This set of games was played to see how well the all cavalry option for the Graeco-Bactrian would fare against victorious Mauryan Indians.

Elephants, chariots and their crew are now done and varnished. Tomorrow, I shall assemble them and add these to the others that need their bases textured. By the end of next week I should have photos of these and a group photo of the Mauryan Indian in battle array (big battle numbers).
Thereafter, a big battle game between the Seleucid and Mauryan is planned for the end of this month or early next month as we have a good number of holidays coming.
