At the start of the year I promised to showcase 12 armies in 2018 and here is number 12……and it is biggie – all versions of the Year’s War English from 1322 – 1455. This gives me worthy opponents for my Scots Common and Welsh armies (although I will do Feudals as well….but there I have a plan for that!) It also gives me a very good excuse to do a Medieval French Army next year. With the English there are lots of different troop types across these 4 armies and masses of Long Bow…however NO PIKE!!!!!
As normal with my mediaeval armies all these figures are from Alternative Armies. The core of this army is the a list with the knights being the MEC9 and MEC10 figures “Mid 14th C Knight” which give nice figures in bascinets. As usual the lances have been removed, replaces with wire and flags come from www.krigsspil.dk which has an awesome selection for HYW. Dismounted knights are ME24 and ME25 14th C Knight with Spear and Axe with a sprinkling of ME22 HI Axeman (love this figure) and ME35/35A Knight in Bascine with Sword or Halberd. Now I don’t really like either of these figures – but they work if used sparingly. For the Hainaulters I decided to use MEC8 early 14th C Knight , just to make them look different. The MEC24 14th C Hobilar comes into its own with this army as does MEC23 Mounted Longbowman when coupled with ME17 English LHI Longbow (firing), the ME23 LT MED Bidower and ME18 English Longbowman for the Shire Levy. Now you’ll notice there are no German knights – 2 reasons for this – first I’d never really want to use a 7 x 3Kn option and prefer the 3Lb every day; second, IF I do use them I’ll take them from my Medieval German army anyway.
The b, c and d lists add more Longbow and as time passes I change the mix to using ME32 Longbowman 15th C and ME33 Heavy Longbowman 15th C. I used ME27 HI Halberd for the billmen, ME10 HI Spearman for False-French Town Militia (only because I have lots of this figure and wanted to use some up) and finally the MEG1 Bombard and 2 crew set which is a stunning little gun. Welsh allies are ME8 LT MED Welsh Bowman ( I had to paint a solid Welsh Longbow for this army) and ME8A Welsh Long spear and shield.
I had a head start with painting this army as many of the Longbow I had painted up 20+ years ago for WRG 7th Edition armies. However, I added to this core using the same style which gave me a brown and red colour theme for the army. I really liked this especially with the Mounted Longbow which were sprayed black then dry brushed leather before block painting red, steel and flesh then detail. Painting the knights (mounted and dismounted) is never a chore and I chose more simple heraldric designs to make life easy. The Hainaulters came up a treat and I liked the stripes on their lances so much I decided to dispense with the usual flags. Several other figures were quick repaints from an old Teutonic army, including the gun.
I based this army on the Battle of Crécy (26 August 1346) but I’ll start with the a list 1322 - 1333 as this forms the basis of the army. The historical accuracy of this army is good. The heraldry for the knights is well researched and I even grouped the knights and blades into left, right and reserve battles (bases) based on the dispositions from Crecey. Shields where needed just got rather a rather dull Cross of St George.
Now I know that this army is good on the table top even with an aggression of 3. One option gives 8 x 4Lb, 4 x 4Bd which gives lots of shooting and a solid centre – this would have been quite awesome in PAWS this winter. However, I’d probably look to using a Mtd-4LB for a bit of mobility and a bombard for the longer range. The actual Crecy list gives you “Hobsons choice” between a 3Pk and a Sp – both of which are limited without support but allows for both Mtd-4LB and some 3Kn bases which provides more options. One day I’d love to use the a list with the a list allies option: 10 x 3Kn plus 2 x 3Lb; fairly impractical but very colourful!
