just a small idea i've got : i have problem with units gliding on my terrain grass hills, i think i am not the only one! so apart having flat hills (that is fine, but, to my pt of view, less realistic and nice for a wargame table) i've got an idea to share : my unit have magnetic underside, so it's pretty slippery and very annoying when you try to place it on hill sides, so i proceed exactly like in real world, i take my cutter and without pressing the blade to hard (beware the blade! ) i make some longitudinal and diagonal lines on the magnetic underside... easy, simple and it work ! (ok it depend of the angle of the slope but most of the time it doesn't glide anymore!) i feel better now!

I have been using a little bit of painter's tape to get my elements to stop from slipping.
Your method is a more permanent solution, that's for sure.

good idea too, i wanted something that didn't change the magnetic power for army transportation, it's why i've got this idea...

I have contoured my hills. Still look like hills with height, if a little stylised. I make sure the depth of the contours is not enough to tip elements over, although nine times out of ten they stand on the flat of the contour anyway.
