I am currently considering building a matched pair with III/7a Pre Samurai Japanese and III/6a Emishi.
The Kofun Japanese army is mostly built around bows, adding two Cv, a horde and two Sp to liven things up. The perfect enemy to fight would be the early Emishi list, which offers a choice of a Bw general and eighter 11x Bw or Ps in any mixture. They have an aggression of 0 and are at home in the forests.
Now I would like to ask more experienced players which composition to choose for the Emishi list given the aforementioned circumstances? Especially in regards to fun and balanced games.

Too bad you never got a reply to your question. I just started renovating my III/6a Emishi, hence why I stumbled across this old post. I'm not sure what the ideal mix of Fast Bows to Psiloi is. David Kuijt used to say, "If you can't with nine of any one element, taking more probably won't help." --I'll plan to have eight of each available.
I'm also prepping LH figures so I can field the "b" version as well, so as to match up against Eric Donaldson's in-progress III/7b Ritsuryo Pre-Sammies. But, why exactly would I want to do this? Painting an army with 9 LH to face an army (its only historical opponent) with a potential of eight shooters is kinda nuts.

Ooo, nice offer! Thanks for that, but I already have the figures on-hand, a minor excavation from my mountain of lead.

Just finished the "b"version of the Emishi. ( 15mm Baueda) Is there a DBA army that have sub-lists that are any more different, one from another, than the all-foot, "a" version of the Emishi, and the (nearly) all-mounted, "b" version? January 1st of the year 700 must have been an amazing day on the island of Hokkaido. (Grins.)

Paul, it could have been a very strong commitment to a radical New Year's resolution ð. And likely a very foolish one. I mean, look at the make-up of its sole opponent: Seven Bow elements and Artillery.

The dappled grays were my attempt to mimic the fine brushwork of our local DBA group who has really mastered the art of painting dappled horses. Old hands from the original Fanaticus may recall that some of us bagged and cajoled Baueda to produce this obscure army, which they did. Years later now, I finally got around to painting it.

Really love the look you got on the horses' hides!
