Hello,
I took part in a DBA 3.0 tournament where we had a classic matchup; Anglo-Danish vs Norman.
As I was using the Anglo-Danish list for two of the three battles I took notice of the difficulty in defending against such a mobile army. In fact the Norman army won all 3 battles in our round.
The thing I noticed was there was no way of preventing a column of horse from moving against the flanks. There is always a gap between table edge and terrain that create a “highway” for the horse.
I tried to position a spear, or blade, into the gaps, but if I lost that unit my whole line would soon be exposed.
What tactical advice can you provide for spear heavy armies defending against a mounted force.
Thank you

Look to Hastings...
Setup on a hill and use woods the best you can to protect your flanks. It still will be a tough fight... with the knights being able to pick their points of attack.

Just following on from what Joe said, using terrain to protect your flanks is a tactic all generals should use. Note that it is not always necessary to have your battleline actually touching the impeding terrain... ...use your Threat Zones as a weapon by having something in the terrain to prevent the enemy from flanking you. Of course, if you are the invader, then the defender may not place such terrain for you to exploit. And if you are the defender, the invader picks the deployment areas, also denying you suitable anchoring terrain. In these cases, learn how to defend your flank with inferior forces, like this:- Kn Cv Sp Sp Sp etc... Sp Sp Sp etc... . . SpHere the blue player has kept a single Sp on his left wing back and positioned so that it is off-set and potentially facing two red mounted. The red Cv cannot flank the blue Sp at the end of the battleline because of the held back blue Sp’s Threat Zone. And the left red Kn cannot attack the flank of the held back blue Sp, because it is not beyond the line extending from that Sp’s flank. (See element ‘A’ in figure 8 on page 19 of the rules)Thus one blue element is tying-up two red elements, allowing the blue player to have an extra element somewhere else. It won’t hold forever, as the red player may charge both of his mounted as a group into the held-back blue Sp, forcing it to conform. But it will delay him...and hopefully buy time for the extra blue element to do some damage at the other end of the line. Also, depending upon the distances, it may take the red player more time/PIPs to get his Kn close enough as well... Roll better. In my experience, it all comes down to the first impact. With that said, I would take the foot against knights every time.

Note that if the Saxons are defending the. You can place a BUA on the table edge about half way and then later manufacture the road to go from the two other sides and ensuring this BUA pins one flank. Even if a wood on one flank with the 1BW space in a similar position, means you could get a Ps in there and TZ the outside lane. If a mounted wants to enter such a wood then that is pretty risky.

Thanks for the replies.
Phippsy I did use the BAU in my games. While it proved to be a royal PITA for the Norman player it only delayed the wrap around. I am not sure if I deployed the BAU in the best way. I am relatively new to DBA.
Can you deploy a BAU less than one BW from the table edge? Are they any pictures of the terrain setup you describe? Having a visual would be most useful.
Tony do you advocate being aggressive with the spear line? I kept wondering if I should have forced the issue
Thanks

Historically spear have always been venerable to cavalry moving round an open flank, so terrain helps, and a road can be useful.

The simple answer to your question Louien is yes you can. See the rule on page 6, paragraph 4, the very last sentence:- “There must be a gap of at least 1 BW between area features and between an area feature other than a BUA and any battlefield edge.” As for a picture or diagram showing what Phippsy was saying, I did write a short article about the use of Cities and Forts in DBA. That has some diagrams in it, and it can be found here: fanaticus.boards.net/thread/1373/thoughts-on-fortsYou might also find the following useful:- (Scroll down the first page to the 7th post to find links to the “Terrain Hint Card”) fanaticus.boards.net/thread/1331/troop-hint-cards-dba-3Last of all, have a look at the links at the bottom of this post, where there is other stuff that might be of some help. Stevie,
I had a look at the link you provided for the 2 page sheet on forts etc. A good read.
In the first example where the small fort Is in a corner, and on the invaders edge, how do you ensure the Fort gets on the invaders side?
I can see how it can work with the second example on the side and with the road, but surely if the defender places a fort in a corner, then the invader chooses the edge that ensure the fort is in the defenders rear corner...

I hope Phippsy doesn’t mind, but I’m notorious for making threads go off topic.
