For the last couple of months I have been playing a great deal of English Civil War Battles using the Peter Pig "Regiment of Foote 2" rules. I have enjoyed these games very much and feel they give an excellent flavour of the era.
However last night I wanted a quick ECW battle and so formed up a quick 12 element aside DB RRR engagement.
I randomly selected and placed the terrain both forces were similar
Parliamentarian = 1 x General 2 x Pike 4 x Shot 1 x Dragoons 1 x Skirmisher 1 x Artillery (Cannon) 2 x Pistol and 1 x Cavalry
Royalist = 1 x General 2 x Pike 4 x Shot 1 x Dragoons 1 x Skirmisher 1 x Artillery (Cannon) 2 x Gallopers (Knights) 1 x Cavalry
I played using my solo system. As usual I commanded the forces of Parliament. I was the attacker.
I set my forces up with my Cavalry on the right flank, My dragoons behind the wood on my right flank. My Artillery I placed on the road that joined the forces flanked by all my infantry. I brigaded my infantry to form 2 groups of Shot/Pike/Shot. The skirmishers just in front of the infantry next to the infantry in the centre I had a regiment of Pistols. The remaining pistol unit was on the left flank. My general (Cromwell) was centre rear.
Royalist set up Pike and Shot together on the left flank. A detached shot form this group garrisoned the hamlet in the centre of the Royalist line. Their artillery also set up on the road flanked by 2 Galloper units. The skirmishers flanked them and then on the right of centre they placed a brigade of foot Shot/Pike/Shot with a cavalry regiment on their far right flank. Dragoons were in the rough ground (Ploughed Field) near their centre. Their General (Prince Rupert) was centre rear.
I played the battle using my solo system.
The Royalists opened proceedings by an advance towards one of my infantry brigades by their gallopers supported by artillery, They failed to back up their attack with infantry support and were repulsed, as was my cavalry unit on my left flank.
An Infantry and dragoon assault by the Royalists on my centre right saw me loose my skirmishers and a unit of Shot. I supported my infantry that Ruperts gallopers were harassing with my Pistol unit but they fell to a determined attack by the gallopers supported by skirmishers.
I managed by push of pike to destroy a Royalist shot unit on my centre right but my fate was sealed when a unit of Pikemen were overrun by the wretched gallopers, and as Cromwell was supporting them at the time he was carried off Horrs De Combat into the bargin!
A really fast paced and challenging game. I had forgotten how fun DB RRR can be!
Even if I lost!
