I have been asked by Tim Porter who runs the BHGS Britcon if there would be interest in a DBA one day event at Roll Call, which will be 27/28 April next year? The venue is not far from Milton Keynes.
If there is, we would need a co-ordinator to run it. This is not arduous as Tim and the team arrange the venue, manage bookings and set up the tables. The main responsibilities of the co-ordinatore are to set the way the day will be run and send words for Tim to put on the BHGS website as well as publicise the event on the various forums (I use Yahoo as well as this one). On the day itself there is generally running the timetable, keeping the scores and answering any rule questions (toss a coin if necessary!)
Thoughts?

I think the answer is that there probably is room for another tournament, especially as I assume the Mercian will not run next year, given the organiser's re-location. Whether or not Roll Call fits the bill, might be a different question.
Key to answering the latter might be (a) accessibility and (b) cost. Most of the competitions I attend are ones within easy-ish reach of home, which means I can travel there and back on the day. When that is the norm, an over-night stay pushes up the cost considerably and potential players might feel they have to pick and choose which ones to attend.

I think the main issue is whether anyone will be willing to run it! I am sure there will be people willing to play.

There used to be a DBA tournament at Shefield, I'm not sure if that ceased or moved elsewhere when that venue ceased holding shows?
Also the Gateshead show...way back in the 80's hosted a large DBA competition...it must have been DBA 1 but there were several games on.When the Gateshead shows stopped the DBA didn't transfer to the Border Reiver and simply vanished from the North East?I'm sure the Gateshead shows used to be held in October?

There used to be one at Alton in early April, Newark (old Sheffield) is usually the end of April I think.
So you might or might not be lucky there, if I remember correctly April is a busy month for shows and other wargames events though (or it used to be).

Yes, Alton early April is probable...moved around to suit others in the past, but late March/early April is as regular as you can get (though it has clashed with the SoA Battleday more than once).
I’d offer to run the new one, but am very much at the mercy of erratic work rostering these days, so am unable to commit to pretty much anything.

It would be nice to see an inclusive calendar on the forum...it could certainly be helpful if not informative?

From my point of view Milton Keynes is probably on the edge of a comfortable day's travel there and back (particularly with the M1 roadworks at present), so not sure.
If the Mercian was still on I'd definitely go to that in preference.

The critical requirement is for a volunteer to liaise with Tim Porter and other DBA tournament organisers (to avoid clashes) and see if something can be arranged. As ever, people will be willing to travel vcarious distances - always good to see the south coast crowd up in Newark, Manchester and Bakewell!

As it looks like finding someone to run an event is going to be problematic I will let Tim know that we are unlikely to be having a DBA tournament at Roll call 27/28 April next year.
