So, what's the most probable way to equip Helots in an Early Hoplite (I/52b) Spartan army?
I'm imagining that they'd have an Aspis and a Spear, but no armor or helmet, and of course as 7Hd, they'd not form a very orderly phalanx.
Or should I be thinking of them more with "sticks and rocks"?
I seem to recall that Helots were not generally allowed to own weapons, but if the Spartans armed them on campaign, surely they'd arm them with spear and shield, since I doubt that Helots would be handy with javelins and slings. (Also, Phil rates them as 7Hd, though I guess that could consist of a mob of skirmishers.)
I'm considering building them out of some extra "Numidian" WF plastics I have.
Helot Hordes are sort of a "special effect" element in that army it seems to me. I could see using them to guard the camp (7Hd are better than camp followers at least), or if trying to recreate specific battles.

Somewhat embarrassingly, I just searched the old Fanaticus site for more or less this same question, and discovered I had already asked it, and it was answered.
Sorry - I blame low blood sugar?

Here are some selected Helot related quotes from the other thread:
SUMRULD - "Helots - Many accompanied the Spartiates as servants both personally and as camp servants. Care was taken that they were not given the Aspis or Dory. They most likely fought with javelins, slings, or even bows (weapons the Spartans considered less than manly at least in the early period). Some may have fought with improvised weapons (essentially farm tools, since that was their primary function in Sparta)."
Cedric Ballbusch - "Helots are rabble. Nude or near-nude rock throwers with a spear or javelin here or there is about the best I would expect them to have. I think Xyston ANC20010 'Greek Psiloi' fits the bill nicely."
Haadrada - "Helots can be depicted to personal choice with little or no clothing painted in dull colours and possibly shieldless."

Good to know. Have a half-dozen of the Museum Miniatures (?) 'naked guys running with scythes' sitting waiting to be painted. They have found a purpose in life.
