Being cheap I make mine using bamboo skewers - some salvaged after kabobs... Spray white than mark off the alternate BWs with red or black. They also fit reasonably well between stands. I use bamboo skewers, too - with some preparation you can even spray a dozen at a time.

Second hand knitting needles cut to different lengths for me.
But make sure you line the distance up with the edge of the hacksaw blade, not the centre, that extra millimetre could make all the difference one day!!

No such thing as second-hand knitting needles, Mark, at least so my C-in-C tells me. I am sure Colin the Hittite will confirm.
