Currently I have the following "almost finished" armies:
- Anglo Saxons - half painted but paused as I paint up TravelBattle for an upcoming trip - Vikings - painted and based but waiting Anglo Saxons for flock and also need camp - Gauls - were finished but felt that I couldn't use woad tattooed 3Wb as substitutes so 8 x 3Wb were painted and based but waiting for flock - NKE - need camp - Early Carthaginians - Finished but proportions of Citizen and Libyan spearmen need to be adjusted. Also need Camp renovation - Thracians - finished BUT then Tin Soldier brings out a Thracian Javelin thrower which suits the Ps elements better... - Late Hoplite Greeks - looking for appropriate figures for Black Sea and Agesilaus' expedition (Tin Soldier armies)
Cheers

This sounds so very familiar! I do to suffer from the same affliction.
I try to maintain interest in an army by reading all that I can about them, research their weapons, armour, dress, banners, their history and battles...but then I get to a point where another army undermines my interest and replaces the worked-on army in priority.

For me it is knowing full well that I will die of old age before I ever get to paint all the miniatures I have, and it is just going to get worse in the next couple of weeks when I go to CanGames, as I am sure I will purchase more minis.
I am finding though, that I have a better track record for finishing armies for DBA than I do for other rules sets, especially the Napoleonics one I play, as that requires a huge amount of figures to be painted up and \I find I am making little progress.
With DBA armies, it doesn't take all that long to get an element painted up, giving me a sense of accomplishment and knowing I am getting closer to a finished army, motivating me to keep painting.
I also find that regularly going to this site and reading people's posts, motivates me to paint as well.

Jim,
This is where peer pressure really helps! I learned this from the Lead Adventure Forum Army Painter Challenges.
7 armies on your painting table and its May. Pledge to showcase 1 army per month on this Forum and by 31 Dec you'll have cracked them all! What's more I'll match you! I've pledged to showcase 12 armies this year, 2 down already - 10 to go.
Any one else in?
Paddy

If I have an army to paint and it is a standard DBX force I break the army down into 4 groups of 4 elements. Each group contains as far as possible elements of each type, for example 2 x blades, 1 x Auxilia and 1 x Cavalry.
I then aim at each painting session to do one Group, and thus it is possible to complete my army in a week. Putting different elements into each group helps me maintain interest.

Our local group plans and publishes a list of upcoming themes for our bi-weekly DBA Game Night for about three months ahead. Eric Donaldson and I find that list of topics effective motivation to complete half-done projects. For example, next week it's Meso-American armies, so I'm completing "Purple" renovations of my Tarascans and Pueblo Cultures armies, and Eric just finished a brand-new Aztec army, with its six Fast Hordes.
These little deadlines really help to focus my painting efforts. Otherwise, I'd be forever dabbling aimlessly on this and that.

I usually have three armies on the go at once which helps break the monotony and keep it interesting - that coupled with my slightly obsessive compulsive leanings to collecting the whole set means that most of my armies get finished (even if there are some elements I would not use in a pink fit!!). At the moment I am trying to bring my stable of armies up to the new Purple Book standard which means painting up a lot of odds and sods.
Each year I run an ongoing campaign and I have found that needing the troops for that set provide motivation to finish off the list of armies. This year we are running a Rise of Islam campaign and I am just shy of getting all 10 armies up to full purple code (all that remains is a new Sassanid army - about 75% done and the last couple of Cv elements for the Khazars.
Next cab off the rank will be the Northern Crusades set - The Poles and the Golden Horde are done, the Russians, Prussians and Scandinavians need only a small number of elements each so should get knocked over quickly and then comes the Teutonic Order, Lithuanians (lots of 3Bw), Medieval German and Wallachian.
cheers

Today I finally finished the CF element for my Late Swiss army. Amazing how an upcoming tournament provides the right amount of motivation.

But how is the house painting going?

...Amazing how an upcoming tournament provides the right amount of motivation. It certainly does. Though I recall a multiplayer Moderns game in Wellington once where one of the organisers, who was supplying some of the figures, was still basing miniatures the morning of the event.

For larger projects that are nearing the end, I go out to the shed, set up the table. The prospect of getting troops on the table ives me the enthusiasm to go inside and paint the last handful of bases!

But how is the house painting going? One of Mark's traditions is to flock bases the night before a competition! House painting is progressing slowly. With the colder weather it can take up to 3 hours before a second coat can be applied! We start our bedroom tomorrow. My hobby room and the lounge/dining room may have to wait until spring. Cheers,

On the 3rd of May, I started cleaning and undercoating the first of two armies (Anglo-Saxons and Vikings). Although they lack their banners, both armies are ready for battle after ten days of painting.
Painting each army took four sessions to complete with each session using specific colours or shade. At the end of session three, the figures were completely covered leaving the final session for highlights, dry-brush and shield patterns.
During each session I had music playing in background to help motivate me through painting, such as the Viking soundtrack or Celtic songs.

As I think I have noted previously. I keep a number of irons in the fire - figures prepped and primed for various armies that can be worked on incrementally. When i am doing a particular color on figures for the hot burner project and there are only a couple of figures on which I am using that color. I grab figures from groups that are not on the faster track and apply that color. It draws some projects out a bit, but as a major percentage of the paint consumed in painting is cleaned out of the brush each time it is used, it cuts the overall paint per figure a bit.
Working this way also gives me a selection of projects that than can be upgraded to the fast track and pushed to completion should it be desired to do so.
That movie looks interesting timurilank.
On the other hand, I have been listening to Tuvan throat singing, Vivaldi, or L’Arpeggiata and counter tenor Phillipe Jarousky when I am painting. Latelymore of the latter two - not sure whether it improves the mood, but I have always favored Classical (although I also have a Celtic harp slection bookmarked as well).

So the deadlines will be: - Anglo-Saxon/Anglo Danish, Vikings, Gauls all finished by end of August. Lot's of overlap with these projects - NKE by end of September (another business trip but I can get a camp, BUA and ediface done. - Early Carthaginians/Thracians/Greeks by end October. Birthday month, so should get some "me" time. Then an army a month from then. Choices include Nikephorian, Crusaders, Saladin, Sumerians (probably), HOTT mythical greek and anything shiny I buy in the meantime. Cheers Jim
