Unsurprisingly, being the organiser of the Northern Cup, I am also an advocate of the matched pairs style and also much prefer to play in those tournaments. However, I do feel that there is a place for true Open competitions and the Midlands Open, therefore, should stay as such, IMHO.

I can assure everyone that either format run by Simon has been fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed. I don't like limited lists personally cos that means I have to make something to play rather than bring what I have but do see the attraction of themed events.

I think the Midland Open should continue as it is. Ditto the Northern Cup, Tarrington scramble, Welsh Open, Alton Matched Pairs, etc.etc.etc.

As an ex DBA player I would say keep as many different types of tournament as possible.
I loved Tarrington because it forced you out of your comfort zone, you might end up with a 100% mounted army, despite being an infantryman.
Matched pairs are more difficult if you do not build matched pair armies, but that can be got round.
Keep as many variations, and play them, however at the same time competition organizers need to watch out for armies or troop types that make the game more difficult for everybody else to play.

Agreed
I think it's good to have a variety of tournaments, as different people may like playing different formats so it encourages more people to pick up the dice and have a go.
Also any limited competition may put people off who don't have a suitable army, (although most organisers offer spare armies which is good).

Nice pictures as always Martin.
One question, if anyone can help, how did the Italiot Landing work?
I.e can you land like that making a legal and illegal contact? If so I presume the legal contact couldn't turn to face, so what happened?

Nice pictures as always Martin. One question, if anyone can help, how did the Italiot Landing work? I.e can you land like that making a legal and illegal contact? If so I presume the legal contact couldn't turn to face, so what happened? Good question. I think my opponent placed the Sp a few mm away from the Tamils. We played it that as the beach-bound Tamil 3Bd would have no room to swivel, the landing Italiot Hoplite group slid (leftwards in the photo) to conform with the Tamils who were looking down the coast...a long slog ensued.⚔️⚔️ What should have happened, I have no idea 😳

Well done Arnaud.
Did not recognise you first of all with the long locks. Very Gallic.
Thanks for all the write ups.
